Movie is supposed to be the blockbuster of the year. Looks like a cross between Stargate and Avatar.

Trailer of the movie looks good.

John Carter of Mars

Back in the early 70’s the books of Conan and John Carter of Mars was on every youths bookshelf by the bed.

I must have had them all.

I'll be going - if not just for the memories.

Me too! My Dad read all of those Burroughs books, then gave them to me. Nothing like Burroughs and Howard! Going to check this out tomorrow, for sure. I saw an interview of the director and he sounded like a real ERB fan, and it looks like it will be faithful to the saga.

Powder..patch..ball FIRE!

I remember reading the book when I was 11. Had a crush on the princess then and hoped all turned out well after the book ended.

Will be going to see shortly.

Is the princess 12 feet tall?

“I need a woman ‘bout twice my height,
statuesque, raven dress,
a goddess of the night...”

The CGI work in the trailer is incredible. Stuff that was done only 4-5 years ago, considered state of the art back then is now old school.

If it's getting released in March, and trailers are running every other commercial on every TV station....

I'm dubious. Sounds like another "Watchmen" to me. Lots of promise, low delivery.

My kids have read/are reading the books. They’re getting to go see the movie this weekend.

I believe the line is “raven tressed” - as in her hair was black.

And it is the green Martians (the Tharks and the Warhoons) who have four arms and are 12 feet tall.

Dejah Thoris, the titular Princess of “A Princess of Mars” (the original title), was a normal human size (although she was a Martian and laid eggs).

I saw preliminary trailers on it last Summer and I think production problems led to a delayed release.

Every review I have seen has been positive. The comments I have gotten were that this movie encompasses about 3 of the books - glosses over some portions, while expands on others. But, overall a fun and entertaining adventure for the entire family.

My wife and I are looking forward to this. Good, family friendly movies are few and far between. Spare us the preaching on the environment, slavery, capitalism and white oppression - bring on some great entertainment, some humor and excitement.

So, what part of the movie accuses him of racism and of owning slaves, and therefore is unfit to assimilate into Martian society?

I will definitely be seeing this one over the weekend. I’m a big fan of the books. I’ve read all the books which actually feature John Carter, but have not covered all the Mars series books as yet.

I think the whole series is public domain these days, so if you have a kindle (or comparable access) you can download them for free.

“raven tressed”... You are, no doubt, correct.

As far as the princess goes, I suppose I could put up with her being an egg-laying martina and NOT being 12 feet tall, since she is not green and four-armed. After all, one should be willing to compromise, shouldn’t one?

I read “A Princess of Mars” in the 50s from an autographed copy passed down to me by my father. I wish I still had the book. The Barsoom series of Edgar Rice Burroughs was and still is my all time favorite sci-fi fiction. I hope Disney hasn’t beat the story up to much.

I wish. The novels of Burroughs were public domain until about 2000 when they changed the copyright laws to 70 years beyond the auther’s death (it used to be 50 years). Burroughs died March 19, 1950, so we’ve got another 8 years before the copyright police let go.

The first five are out of copyright in the US. Project Gutenberg search for Edgar Rice Burroughs.
