A potato has no fat content unless you load it with butter or sour cream.

The gall bladder reacts to the ingestion of fat. That includes vegetable fat. Just stay away from anything with fat in it, or alcoholic drinks.

Vodka is made from potatoes and has no fat, so I’d just drink plenty of that. ;-)

A potato is a vegetable. Did he tell you to avoid starch heavy foods?

In other words can you eat a slice of bread or a bowl of oatmeal?

I Had my gall bladder removed in 1990. Best thing ever! I have been eating everything including fatty foods such as Pizza, cheeseburgers, etc. and have zero problems. However I have learned to avoid huge portions. The pain of gall bladder attacks was horrible and so happy no more attacks.

From what I have read, the bile duct takes over the function of gall bladder. And it is possible for stones to reappear in the bile duct. Eating lot of vegetables is helpful, especially non-acidic type such as zucchini & okra. I like the suggestion of apple-cider-vinegar also.

I have found conflicting things on the internet.

Welcome to the world of healthcare and medicine, where most involved in that industry agree on little of anything.

Go ahead and eat the potatoes, as recent studies say they are good for you.

But do it fast, as new studies suggest they cause enlargement of the drool gland and bloat cells. In fact, the new study to be release next week indicates just looking at a potato can cause drool gland enlargement, in some cases.

I’ve had several ultrasounds of my gallbladder, and no one ever told me to avoid potatoes or any starches before the test. As long as you don’t eat something with fat in it. BTW...gallbladder has been removed since then.

“VEGETABLE” is an invented classification, assigned to certain foods by custom and common assent. Thus, for example, potatoes (tubers), turnips and radishes, etc. (roots), and tomatoes (true, seed-bearing fruits) are collectively dubbed “vegetables” and marketed as such.

The nutritive content, specific chemical composition and physiological effects of a food are factors (and no doubt there are others) that should drive decisions regarding consumption of a particular food from a plant source, rather than whether or not it falls within the range of the over-generalized “vegetable” category of foods.

The reason you are required to leave off any fatty foods prior to your ultrasound is that you want the GB to be distended so there will be significant opportunity to see the stones contrasted against a 'watery' matrix. Eating anything fatty stimulates the hormone cholecystokinin which then stimulates the smooth muscle in the wall of the GB to contract, thus emptying the GB. Therefore you do not want to stimulate this action prior to the ultrasound study.

Beware of people telling you to avoid surgery if you have cholelithiasis. Should you push a stone from the GB into the common bile duct it can result in obstrucion of the liver and/or pancreas. This will lead to jaundice and possible pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a very dangerous medical condition. If one has obstructive pancreatitis due to a retained stone, the obstruction must be relieved. One of the most feared complication of pancreatic obstruction is acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis where the walls of the blood vessels are 'digested' by proteolytic enzymes manufactured in the pancreatits. Autodigestion leads to very bad outcomes. The uncommon condition of acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis has a very high mortality rate as well as profound and life-long complication. There are a few who tell you to get a second opinion. Do it. Get 3 or 4, but get them from people who deal with the problem routinely.
