Mitt Romney may have a new constituency to worry about: dogs and dog lovers.
The group Dogs Against Romney held a protest outside the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York on Tuesday afternoon to bring attention to the story of how 25 years ago, Mr. Romney drove from Boston to Canada on vacation with his dog, Seamus, in a carrier strapped to the roof of the family station wagon a tale that political commentators and opponents have seized on it as a window into Mr. Romneys character. About a dozen people stood outside Madison Square Garden with signs reading Mitt is Mean.
And it has also drawn people who wont let go. With almost 2,500 followers on Twitter and 25,000 likes on Facebook, Dogs Against Romney mostly has fun with the issue, posting cute pictures online of dogs wearing bandanas that say I Ride Inside. Members call themselves a super pack, sign messages with woof, and sell T-shirts with the slogans Never forget Crate-Gate and Dogs arent luggage.

Thanks for the ping!
Thanks for posting this! What a creep Mitt is.
Did you see mean-faced Martha Stewart at the show? She had entered her Chow named - so sweetly - Genghis Khan. I don’t think ole Khan won any medals.
Stewart looked exactly like the brilliant actress Parker Posey in “Best in Show”!!!
That’s the joy of dogs. I just went out to buy some milk and had to get down on the rug with my little sheltie and roll around and play with her before I could have my coffee!
After being involved in the dog world (and working for a vet) I have seen people do so many really stupid things through the years, this doesn’t even rank in the top ten. I don’t support him for President, but this isn’t why. And yes, I love dogs, but the left has far worse things in mind for us and our pets.
Not that I’m an expert on where wolves live, however I’ve never owned a dog (and I’ve owned plenty) who didn’t “go to ground” (that is find a tight space, under the bed, in a closet, between the wall and the sofa, whatever) when they were afraid or overwhelmed etc. So, for whatever reason dogs seem to like being in a small space to get away from it all and feel safe. This has seemed especially true for the few I’ve had who had anxiety about thunderstorms.
At any rate, since crate training works, and probably keeps a lot of dogs from ending up dumped or in the a shelter or worse, I’m all for it.
A lot of show people are jerks (like a lot of people period). I’ve never been to the Garden (it’s really just another dog show) but everyone I know whose been complains about the venue, they say it’s crowded etc. It’s never made me want to go and deal with it when I can watch it on tv.
But yeah, while it’s a great hobby, there are jerks involved and it doesn’t take many to turn people off. BTW we have this thing here (in S. FL) that seems to be very popular where people take their dogs into the mall! It’s weird. And not in the strollers, but on leashes. And into the stores now. I love dogs, but some of those little dogs are yappy and seem like they might bite. I’m just waiting for some little kid to get bitten. And I’ve also wondered how often clothing gets peed on too.
Romney did not put his dog in the cargo department of an airplane.
He tried his dog’s crate to the roof of his car.
Was that in the best interests of the dog? Clearly not. The dog left objective evidence that it was afraid.
A healthy dog will not defecate in a moving car while it is in the interior of the car.
Romney failed one of the most basic tests of conservatism—care and concern for what God has placed in his care.
Those who are cruel to a dog or a horse or a cat or any animal that God has placed in that individual’s care will almost certainly have no regard for the dignity of their fellow man, and certainly will not fear God.
Thank you. Amen!
I like using crates. However, my current Shepherd Tara - who IS abnormal, let me tell you - couldn’t care less about crates. My wonderful beloved long-gone GS liked them. Not that either of them “needed” it, but when I ended up with the crate in the bedroom after they were mature, only the old dog would part of the time go in and sleep in it, etc. My current GS basically avoided it. She doesn’t mind being put in 1 at all, but given the choice, she ignores it. Doesn’t matter whether it was exposed (wire crates) or covered, either dog.
So, for Tara, we only have it available to pop up if we NEED to put her in a crate for some reason. I’m not wasting space for her to not use it!
They were great for puppy training. But I really don’t need it after that. My dogs have the run of the house, as I expect them to be reliable in all manner.
I found many dog people pretty bad, back in the day. Some were really great people (my old dog’s breeder, a top handler), but many were either arrogant (condescending should they talk to you) or know-it-all NAZIs. This last point especially - and that includes the trickle-down dog “lovers” in every-day life who’ve decided that PetStupid ninny namby-pamby attitudes toward dogs are the way to go, and you’re evil if you ever touch a dog, etc.
While I’ve never been to horse shows, I’ve found “horse people” on-line and sometimes in person generally more tolerant, more respectful and more sane and realistic about the horse than “dog people” are about the dog.
None of my adult dogs (except for a little IG who was never really housebroken but I got him as an adult and he’d been a kennel dog) need a crate once they are adults. All are free in the house and crates are for traveling these days. Years ago I did keep some crates in the house and when I had a lot of dogs I fed them in crates to avoid any sort of disagreements about whose food was whose with newer dogs coming and going.
You know, I wonder if the breed makes a difference in how they feel about it. I’ve mostly had goldens and spinoni. They are both really compliant breeds.
All of my crates that I still have (I hate to get rid of them, they would be expensive to replace if things change for me) are wire and folded up in the garage these days. I haven’t had one in the house since I last had a puppy here to socialize about a year ago.
The only horse people I was around was when I was a kid doing gymkhanas, and they were an ok bunch. I hear cat people are nutty. But truthfully, I know a lot of regular, normal people who show. And they complain about the arrogant etc folk. And the pigs who don’t clean up after their dogs and ruin it for the rest of us.
I got a call from a friend in NY telling me, incidentally, that a Pekinese won Best in Show ... Martha and Genghis can come back next year.
The real question that arises is: how does Martha pronounce her pooch’s name, like most of us or like JFnK ? Inquiring minds want to know!
Oh, thank you ever so much! I LOVE IT!
Bump, BUMP, BTTT!
;o)
LOL ~ BOL!
The Peke who won WKC was amazing, but I was rooting for the Irish Setter and the Dalmation.
From the way it was written on the screen, Martha and F’n have a lot in common.
He didn’t “poop in his crate” he had a severe case of the squirts, so bad it rad down the back of the car and the kids were saying “ewwww gross”. Mitt then stopped the car, hosed down both car and dog and drove off.
What a dreadful thing to do to a dog. When we travel, the dog is in the back of the car with the air conditioner on. If it’s too long a ride, we board her in a clean facility.
His behavior shows a lack of empathy and intelligence and sheer common sense.
Poop is poop, it’s either hard or runny. Bottom line is the dog crapped in the crate. If my dogs were in the car, in their crates, which is how I travel with them, and they pooped in the crate while I was on the road what other choices do I have? I’m not home where I have my fancy grooming supplies, warm water, the dog bath, etc. Now if I was on my way to a dog show I would have some of those things with me, he wasn’t. I’m not sticking up for mitens, but sheesh, what else could anyone do other than to find a place to hose it off and maybe stop and get some Kaopectate to give them to stop the runs.
Maybe the dog had the runs before they left and that’s why he put him in the crate outside the car which is even worse. That would mean the dogs wasn’t feeling well and shouldn’t have even been taken on the trip.
