Shyness, bereavement and eccentric behavior could be classed as a mental illness under new guidelines, leaving millions of people at risk of being diagnosed as having a psychiatric disorder, experts fear.
Under changes planned to the diagnosis handbook used by doctors in the US, common behavioral traits are likely to be listed as a mental illness, it was reported.
The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders could also include internet addiction and gambling as a medical problem.
"We need to be very careful before further broadening the boundaries of illness and disorder," Simon Wessely, of the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, told the Daily Mail. "Back in 1840, the census of the United States included just one category for mental disorder. "By 1917, the American Psychiatric Association recognized 59, rising to 128 in 1959, 227 in 1980, and 347 in the last revision. Do we really need all these labels? Probably not. And there is a real danger that shyness will become social phobia, bookish kids labeled as Asperger's and so on."
Peter Kinderman, head of the Institute of Psychology at the University of Liverpool, said it was not "humane" to describe shy or bereaved people as "mentally ill".
There are fears the new classifications are being driven by drug companies seeking to profit from a greater number of illnesses while the private health care system in the States requires a diagnosis recognized by the manual for a patient to be treated as ill.
"DSM5 will radically and recklessly expand the boundaries of psychiatry. Many millions will receive inaccurate diagnosis and inappropriate treatment," said Allen Frances of Duke University, North Carolina.

It's a win-win for the tyrants - no gvns, dependent on the government for everything and will vote/march/protest/riot as commanded. - dependent, disarmed and obedient just as Lenin intended
watch out for those freaks, I’ve dated them too. They are the bane of society! /s
It kinda looks like they’re trying to put forth the notion that shyness = conservative and that it would be an undesirable personality trait. Polite society is not and need not be “LOUD AND PROUD”. I reject their reality and substitute my own.
Yes, I say let people be who they are. Also, on the flip side, if everyone was really extroverted, can you imagine how loud and hard conversations would be? Everyone would be trying to talk over each other.
on a side note, you’ve been reported to the shy police hehe.
(of course that last part was just a joke). Now I’m nervous, I think that’s eccentric and they’re after me too.
But homosexuality (certainly a non-scientific endeavor) continues to be treated as completely normal.
Yeah. It's already there. the topic under discussion is The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association.
While the psychiatrists quoted are British, they are critical of the Manual.
An obvious clue is that no British psychiatrist/psychologist would class eccentricity as a disorder - at most it would receive the evaluation made by the Sunday Times psychological evaluation in 1967 of Robin Knox-Johnston after he announced his intention of being the first man to solo circumnavigate the world non-stop: "Disturbingly normal"
What is eccentric anyway? How do you classify a country full of independent individuals doing their own thing. This is just a ruse to try and drug everyone.
Shy people probably do not talk much because they have nothing to say to the kinds of idiots writing this drivel.
Grieving is a normal human emotion and is even healthy for someone accepting the loss of a loved one.
This is a case of lunatics running the asylum.
Anyone who is not a sheeple.
Psychiatry is not a true science in that it is impossible to PROVE and REPEAT their conclusions with any reasonable level of certainty. We should not put a lot of stock in their witchcraft.
For every real mental disorder Psychiatry will make up 10 others if for no other reason than to rack up billable hours and to make sure nobody has to take responsibility for their own actions. 90% of their OPINIONs are nothing more than that; unscientific OPINIONs, which cannot be proved and or repeated by independent means. They rely on the 10% of real problems which can be proved to bilk the public out of millions.
If you need another reason to distrust Psychiatry, just ask yourself why the communists wanted it to achieve a high level of importance in the USA. It was included in their manifesto to aid in our destruction.
Shyness is a symptom of a mental disorder, not a mental disorder in itself.
It isn’t mandatory to go to a shrink or a counselor. Who is to know if anyone is shy or grieving? As for people who need medication: they can balance their need with the effect of the label on the rest of their lives.
(Anecdote, not data, alert):
I have known both a PhD psychologist and an MD psychiatrist in my social life. The PhD was a conservative who was run out of his hospital-based practice by concerted effort of the liberals in his department. The majority of his practice was people with insurance that covered his services. He was fairly bored with their problems. He ended up working in the State prison system, which he absolutely hated. His private life was something of a mess.
The MD psychiatrist was also a conservative. He was known for prescribing medication to all his patients. He disliked having to talk with patients and so, hired PhD’s and Social Workers to do the cognitive therapy. He, himself, was considered eccentric and was almost pathologically shy. He had a private practice.
Many folks subscribe to the white-knuckle school of therapy. So, you are shy, lonely, grieving or have a hobby that hurts no one, but that others consider odd? Keep it to yourself. If you do not seek psychological help, no one knows what your classification is.
At some point, I suppose we could all be subject to mandatory counseling and be committed against our will, but that isn’t quite here, yet.
Avoid the idiots and the asylum.
Shame more shyness isn’t going around. We have an over abundance of attention whore “look at me now’s”.
There is already an FDA approved drug that treats this disorder. It is called “Tequila”. You can see some if its side effects in several popular reality shows and mature themed home videos.
Shyness = mental illness, but grown men sexually desiring other men = perfectly normal. Suuuuuure.
Most people consider me shy. I’m certainly quiet. Of course, I seem normal to me.
Despite this “disorder,” over the years I have run for school committee in hostile, moonbat territory, started my own 501 c(3), and served on the board of a crisis pregnancy center, in addition to working a full-time job and opening my own rapidly-growing business.
So shyness hasn’t been a great handicap.
FWIW, Thomas Aquinas’ peers in the seminary called him the “dumb ox,” because he was a big man who spoke little. And he turned out OK.
Different degrees of shyness. I knew a girl in college with a bad case of shyness that really hampered her. If a Prof called on her she would get red faced and her answer came out in a stutter. I lived in a coed dorm and she never spoke and if someone said something to her it one a one word answer.
-—Different degrees of shyness.——
That’s a fair point. I’ve never encountered anyone that shy, so that’s very unusual.
More importantly, this behavior could simply be the transient or permanent result of abuse, in which case the behavior is a symptom, but not a cause.
How about procrastination? I’ve been wanting to propose that as a mental defect, but I keep putting it off!
There are already several drugs that help: vodka, gin, whiskey.
Do you have feelings of inadaquecy, do you suffer from shyness? Do you sometimes wish you were more assertive, if you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist about Tequila. Tequila is the safe natural way to feel more confident about yourself and your actions. Tequila can help ease you out of your shyness and let the world know you are ready and willing to do just about anything. You’ll notice the benefits of tequila almost immediately and with a regimen of regular doses, you can overcome any obstacles that prevent you from living the life you want to live. Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past. Stop hiding and start living with Tequila.
Tequila may not be for everyone.
Women who are nursing or pregnant should not use Tequila however women who wish to nurse or become pregnant should try it.
Side effects include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, incarceration, dancing like a retard, thinking you are whispering when you are speaking loudly, delusions of appearing more attractive to the opposite sex, loss of clothing.
Etc, etc.
