It may seem that we're talkin' foolish, but Randy Travis was arrested early this morning, allegedly drunk in a car parked in front of a Baptist church in the Denton County town of Sanger. (Travis reportedly owns a ranch in Tioga, 25 miles east of Sanger.)
TMZ broke the story. They reported that a citizen notified police of a suspicious vehicle parked in front of the church with a man inside. When cops arrived, they found the one-time platinum-selling honky-tonker inside with an open bottle of wine at hand.
Hold up...Wine? Wine? What kind of honky-tonker gets busted with wine? At least he was apparently swilling it from the bottle, as no there was no report of a receptacle of any kind, but still....
In a follow-up story, TMZ further reported that Travis told the cops he had been fighting with his girlfriend. The cop also reportedly said that Travis was slurring so heavily he could hardly be understood.
Since Travis was not seen driving the car, he was charged with public intoxication rather than DWI, and he was booked into the Denton County Jail around 1:30 am. and was released upon sobering up a few hours later.
You might have missed it, but Travis has been pitchforking the tabloids fodder by the bale since 2010.In September, the singer made news when he collapsed onstage at a Fort Worth gala performance; his camp later put out notice that the reaction between a cup of coffee and some allergy medicine was to blame.
In July of that year, the National Enquirer reported that the 51-year-old singer's 19-year marriage to his 69-year-old manager was coming to an end because Hatcher had caught him cheating with the wife of his dentist, 51-year-old Mary Beougher. Travis and Hatcher's divorce was finalized in October of 2010.
The next month, the Enquirer reported that Travis and Beougher were house-hunting together even before she was divorced, reportedly eying a $10 million mansion near Gainesville, Texas
Unnamed sources predicted disaster for the couple. Not only was Travis drinking again for the first time in many years, but Beougher was oft-married and still unready to settle down, according to the tabloid's always unimpeachable sources.
The article went on to recount Travis's mid-1990s rebirth as a Christian singer, and noted that recent developments might cast the sincerity of that new direction in a less-than-positive light.
"[W]ith adultery, divorce and drinking in his life, Randy is likely to lose some Christian fans," an unnamed source told the paper.
Perhaps that was the real reason he was found outside a church: he was just trying to win back some of those fans.
The 1991 marriage to Hatcher had tongues wagging in Music City. The couple were wed just as Travis was beginning to be publicly confronted with rumors that he was gay, rumors that Travis has always vehemently denied, not least in his Behind the Music-style CMT biography.
All this cowboy Peyton Place carrying-on would seem to put the lie to those rumors, but no doubt for some red-ass country fans, the fact that Travis was caught with wine and not Bud Light or Jim Beam will confirm every suspicion their bigoted hearts have ever held.
That 69 year old woman was Libby Hatcher. She made him. She had the connections, put up the money, set up the “show” where record company executives could see him perform. Without her we’d have never heard of Randy Travis.
I think she owned the restaurant where he was washing dishes.
Here’s a song a guy I know wrote. He made a lot of money just because it was on this album. I recorded 3 of his songs. Got a “look” from Warner Brothers but did NOT get a deal.

I agree. “Three Wooden Crosses” is the best.
That album was one of the ones that got me into country music in a big way back in the late 1980s. After growing up on hard rock, country had such a pure, clean sound to it. Ricky Skaggs, George Strait , Kathy Mattea and Dwight Yoakam were just a few of the other artists I discovered during that time. Then Garth Brooks came on the scene and country music just got too packaged and commercial and I moved away from it.
He just moved in lateley. He lives in Mt Springs, not Sanger. I guesss he got caught in Sanger. He lives 5 miles from John Gibson of FNC.
Merle F'in Haggard!
"But the wine don't take effect the way it used to
And I'm hurtin' in an old familiar way."
Don Singleton. He wrote Mickey Gilley’s big hit FOOL FOR YOU LOVE. It was nominated for song of the year. Haven’t talked to Don in years.
I lived in Memphis at the time and my girlfriend wanted me to pursue a country singing career. She got me hooked up with Don. When we first went in to see him he pulled out a guitar and asked me to sing. I sang one verse and the chorus to ALL MY EXES LIVE IN TEXAS. He put the guitar down and started playing tapes of his songs. I went into his studio and recorded three of them. My girlfriend (now wife) got Warner Brothers to listen to it. They asked her if I planned on going back into the studio to record some more and if I did they wanted first look. Don was impressed. Bottom line is we didn’t have the money to “go back into the studio”. We’d spent our last $1,200 on those three songs. Ha! Plus, I was 31 and that’s a little old to be just getting started.
Thanks for helping me bring up some old memories. Tomorrow will be 25 years since my wife and I met in Waco, Texas. We’re taking a drive to Waco tomorrow to “look up some memories”. Hey, that might make a good country song: “Lookin’ Up Some Memories”. Now if I could only come up with the rest of it.
By the way, Don thought STORMS OF LIFE was the best song on the album, too.
She was in her early 40s. She was his manager and in the early days she would hire musicians to play behind him. A hard and fast rule was NO BOOZE! She was strictly professional. Always had a lot of respect for her. She saw talent that lots of people didn’t. Randy Travis brought country back to country.
Ahh thank you for the recollection. I thought she was in the organization somewhere but was afraid to state it with certainty & too lazy to look it up! lol
Love his music and you are right: he brought country back to country. I had several tapes by him. Such a talent
Have to hold him up in prayer. Many will make him the ‘butt’ of their sick jokes, but life will bite them in the ass at some point as well. jmho
For some reason people think Christians are perfect. We Christians aren’t perfect. We are forgiven.
Well my wife is two years older than me but sometimes it seems like she’s 10 years older. Of course, I often act younger than my years, as many men tend to do.
That’s not too much of a difference though. Not really. Why do you say it seems like 10 sometimes?
I dated and was quite serious with a guy that was 8 years younger than I. He was very mature and I am pretty youthful. It ultimately didn’t last but it was a pleasant relationship. He allowed pressure from others to come between us.
Other of my favorites are:
"Old Enough To Know Better (Still Too Young To Care)"
"She's Acting Single, I'm Drinking Doubles"
"You're Going To Ruin My Bad Reputation"
"How Can I Miss You (When You Won't Go Away)"
"Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down"
"Broke Down South Of Dallas"
Usually as it applies to physical activity. I like to hike and spend time on the beach and she’s content to just stay indoors, even if it’s a perfect day outside. Other than that, we are quite compatible.
ahhh I gotchya.
Our homes do sort of become like our sanctuaries ... or at least that’s the way it is here.
Look, I don’t want to offend you here but I have a very deep connection with the Lord; I continually fall short and find myself asking for forgiveness but trying to do better and changing (repenting) is what the Lord looks at. Not perfection because it doesn’t exist except in the minds of the self righteous.
I know what the Lord says. Perhaps you should take your message to the unsaved.
