Wireless Internet and Cable DVR How Much Should I Be Paying? Help
self ^ | 2/5/12 | self

Dear FReepers,

I live outside Chicago. My current provider for bundled Cable, Internet and home based landline costs 179 dollars a month. I have the large selection of cable stations including History, Military etc, without any premium channels. or DVR.

I'm coming to you my friends to see what suggestions, or ingenious Freepers have come up with to obtain service; I'd like a large number of Cable stations plus a DVR. My son insists upon Internet fast enough to play video games inter-actively online. We need wireless internet for our laptops. I would like a DVR machine with any new service. I don't need the landline service. I would like to learn how to use Skype, or another similar service. Help Your suggestions and thoughts are welcome here; Help!

Can anyone tell me about modern TV antennae usage. In a huge metro area, we have several dozens of free stations. Is the anyone from the Chicago area able to comment about their service.

Am going from Comcast to AT&T Uverse. That price should get DVR included and faster internet. So it looks like this will work out for us.

We've been w/o TV for almost 4 years. The savings so far is mind-boggling but that is insignificant when compared to the improved blood pressure readings.

Netflix...no commercials, watch what you want and don't support the enemy.

Since Comcast charges can differ by region, suggest you also pose your question In the AVS Forum Chicago Comcast thread.

What other providers are available in your market?

I cut the cable about a year ago. We were only watching the History channel, Food Network, some of the animal documentaries, and a couple of the kid channels.

We REALLY miss some of the Food Network shows, though. I haven’t figured out any way to get them online.

” I don’t need the landline service.”
Keep in mind that a landline puts you directly on the 911 system for fire/rescue/police emergency response. I consider it a small expense for valuable insurance. Think about a loved one being in need of emergency medical care and weigh that against the importance of online video gaming.

I live in central NY State and have Time Warner for my Road Runner, TV, and digital phone service. I get a large number of channels, which includes On Demand, Look Back, etc. I don’t subscribe to any of the premium networks, or Encore channels. I also have an HD DVR with them. I got a special deal from them about a year ago, and my monthly bill for everything has been $160. Previously, it was around $219. About a week ago, I got a notice from Time Warner that although my special deal would be expiring soon, they were offering me an extension of that rate because I was a valued customer. Good luck with your quest.

AVS Forum also has a Chicago Over the Air Antenna thread which should answer your questions about "free" TV.

Amen. I ditto your comment 100%.

I don’t understand why anybody “needs” TV other than to satisfy a habit.

Netflix movies via DVD. Only to way to go. Netflix has many more movies on DVD than via streaming.

I am on DSL right now. That is the only reason I have a landline. Is there a wireless device that can run a router for my PCs so I can drop the landline? Failing that is there a good directional antenna I can use to tap surrounding routers?

I don't know Uvere's price w/o the landline. Skype to phone is going to cost something. Skype to Skype costs nothing.

Clark Howard says the cheapest cellphone service is where you buy your own minutes and where they don't age it (forcing you to buy more minutes).

For $32/month (inclusive) Comcast gives me (through my neighborhood HOA):
a) basic digital cable with about 80 channe

For $75/month (inclusive) CenturyLink gives me:

b) landline with unlimited long distance, voicemail & all special features
c) wireless high speed internet 10 Mbps

We don’t game, but we can stream HD video to our TV and have 4 people surfing and youtubing at the same time.

Nobodies allowed to die anymore! Good old fashioned death is out of the question until every last dime’s spent and everyone suffers until the bitter, bitter END. As a physician, I protest Loudly!

I pay $150 for all three plus Tivo, but it’ll jump to about $170 next year. I don’t have it but, DirecTV is really pushing for new subscribers. I would go there first and demand the NFL season ticket for free.

I’ve got Brighthouse (formerly TimeWarner)

internet, cable tv+DVR, and landline phone
126/mo

They raised it to 148 and I called and told them I’d switch to U-verse if they didn’t back off. Not much pushback.

It really helps if you have an alternate provider available to threaten them with.
