The world got an unobstructed view of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley for the first time since the Civil War on Thursday as a massive steel truss that had surrounded the first sub in history to sink an enemy warship was finally removed.

It amazes me how they actually designed and implemented a working submarine back then.

They did...and it worked, just not so well for the sailors that did it nor the ones that tested it. But for it's time, it was indeed a technological miracle.

If you ever get the chance to see it, they have a simulated one that you can sit in. It was TINY, I couldn't even fit in it if you had a crowbar. Truly is amazing and it's one of the charities I donate to.

Regards,

Do you know who holds the patent for the ballast tank system used in submarines? Abraham Lincoln. It was originally a system to lift ships off of sand banks.

Years ago, I saw a Confederate uniform at The Wilderness battle site ..... one leg has been cut off because the soldier was wounded in battle (he survived). I think the soldier was 16, but the uniform was so small - it looked like child's clothes. I had a very emotional reaction when I saw it for several reasons, one of those being the realization of how much smaller people were back in those days.

Not a “dupe thread” scold but just an alert to two other threads on the Hunley that are currently being discussed”
