A medical examiner in Wisconsin was arrested after authorities said she intended to train her dog using human bones from an autopsy.

Police launched an investigation into Traci J. England, 44, after she kept part of the spine from an autopsy she attended Jan. 3, according to a release from the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.

England was arrested on misconduct of public office and theft charges.

She told police she planned to keep the bones to train one of her dogs to recover human remains, Oneida County District Attorney Michael Bloom told the Wausau Daily Herald.

England is out on bond and has been placed on paid administrative leave. Her next court appearance is Jan. 30.

Some dogs are trained with Pseudoscents

Decades ago, I invited the State Police to participate in a *doggie* promotion ...they brought a cadaver dog to demonstrate to the crowd. The K-9 handler told me that they used a human finger [put in a tennis ball] from a *donated for research* body of a homeless guy. In the demo the cop hid the tennis ball ... far, far away ... dog found it in under a minute. Most often *the public* objects to them using human remains ... I understand dogs trained on *Pseudoscents* don't respond the same way to those dogs trained with the *real deal.* I'd be happy to be corrected on this. ;)

Thanks for the information. What the coronor did was creepy, but maybe it’s SOP.

“They would use decomposing flesh instead of bones. (As far as I know).”

You ignore the fact that a fresh spine is going to retain the smells (very similar if not exactly the same) a good long while. Marrow is good for that, and I wouldn’t doubt there are oodles of “info” stuck in that spine anyway. Don’t know if this was “stolen”, or what is SOP for “cleaning” cadavers, but just lifting a spine from the body - I can see it being nice and “juicy” for a good while. Lesser need to refrigerate, too.

I agree with you...it shouldn’t be legal unless you have the family’s permission ...or written/registered in a willed-body program.

I’d say this person’s career is kaput.

The Texas Mexican border IS a crime scene and has been wide open all my life (I am 71). People swim the river (that is the reason they are called wetbacks) and walk until they can find something or someone.

I am sure the Mexican family that was left behind by now has a pretty good idea that the missing person is not coming back. The skull was found at least 20 years ago and had been there for many years from the look of it. There were only a few teeth left and no dental work on the remaining teeth. There was no bullet hole or crack in the skull. It was not on a road just a trail through the brush.

The person could have died in the summer from the 110 degree heat. Rattlesnakes are deadly. Another wetback could have killed him to steal his food.

This is pretty common but still they come because Mexico offers them nothing.

I would suspect that is probably the case.

Like “synthahol” on Star Trek.

You could be right but the lack of skull fractures or bullet holes does not mean the person did not die from a shot to the chest or multiple stabbings.Either way,it’s not a good idea to take a skull because it could belong to a murder victim who was dumped or someone who went missing and just happened to die there because of exposure.

I don’t know that they do (I don’t know what cadaver training usually is). But bones are great for retaining proteins and blood for a good while, and I wouldn’t doubt the corresponding smells. I’m sure this is ultimately why dogs will return to chew bones again and again.

Or, it could be evidence of a graveyard in the area.

I watch the real-life forensic programs. I can’t begin to imagine the stench of a dead body. How do the cops, coroners and M.E.’s stand it?
