Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – review
The Guardian ^ | 1-6-12 | Xan Brooks

Tomas Alfredson's marvellously chill adaptation of John Le Carré's cold war thriller features a delicate performance from Gary Oldman along with a first-rate supporting cast.

A thunderstorm rolled into Venice overnight, flash-bulbing the sky and lancing the boil of heat that has enveloped the city these past six days. One could have sworn that the temperature dropped still further, to practically Baltic levels, during the morning screening of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, a marvellously chill and acrid cold war thriller from Swedish director Tomas Alfredson. Right here, right now, it's the film to beat at this year's festival.

I hope this does not win any big awards. I thought this film was pretty bad, and so did everyone who saw it with me. Forget about answering the question about who was the spy. Who was dead? Who was alive? Who is a homosexual? Who is bisexual? Who is a lesbian?

I was disappointed in this film because the trailers had all looked interesting and I was reeally looking forward to it. What a waste of talent! And a waste of my time!

Just saw it tonight. It was good, but..would have rather seen Sherlock Holmes.. probably better waiting on dvd in my opinion. I was confused a bit as to who was who at some points. Just not quite what I was expecting.

"Who was dead? Who was alive? Who is a homosexual? Who is bisexual? Who is a lesbian?"

Hollywood's obsession with social issues.

Well, this is certainly disappointing! I was really looking forward to seeing it! Guess I’ll just have to settle for little Tommy Cruise in MI. I heard it actually was pretty good.

Just saw it. One-and-a-half stars. Too many subplots, too many layers, no character development, too slow (could have used the time to develop characters). I was looking forward to it, but was a great disappointment.

Saw MI4 last week with 3 others and we all liked it very much.

I liked this motion picture very much and think it deserves Oscar nominations. This is on my best film list for last year.

A lot of people that I know did not like it at all.

I read the novel by John le Carré many years ago. I read most his novels, and found them boring - no action. They were all somewhat confusing in identifying the characters in my opinion. I finally gave up and started reading Robert Ludlum.

Wel, when I start trying to read my watch in the middle of the movie, you can tell that my attention has strayed.

Ghost Protocol was really good. No American bashing, just straight action. Very fun movie.

1 1/2 stars about sums it up for me. I seldom really dislike a movie because I research them before I go, but this one was a shocking disappointment.

I should have been forewarned. NONE of the trailers shown before the film are movies that I would waste my time on.

The end of the Le Carre film came so suddenly that I said, “That’s it?” Everybody around me laughed.

How does it compare with the TV series? I’m going to guess that the TV series is better.

****Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy****

I believe this movie was done for TV about 25 years ago with Alec Guinness as George Smiley.

I’m sure that Guinness would have been better in the role.

***I read the novel by John le Carré many years ago. I read most his novels, and found them boring - no action.***

Years ago, 1966 to be exact, I saw THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, a top notch movie made to show that spy work is not all James Bond. It is the only time I ever fell asleep while trying to watch it in the movie theater. Bo-ring.
