I like Territorial Seed Company.

I should go sit down and curl up with a catalog and get that order in before the mad rush.

Thanks for the thread and all the links JADB. We are experiencing a glorious sunny day in Missouri. We have had great sunny weather all week. We had a high of 67 degrees yesterday.

Not much new with the gardens. We picked up a lot of seeds last year at year end sales. Now I am glad we did what with the increases you are talking about. Of course I grow heirloom for the most part, and save my own seeds. Hubby orders more hybrids.

Have a great weekend everyone. God Bless.

OK, I'll jump and let my dumbness show. Why all the interest in paper catalogs if a person has internet? What am I missing here?

I know that we recently received a Burpee's catalogue. Last summer my tomato plants did nothing due to a lack of attention. I hope to do better this summer.

I was very glad that we had as much as we did planted in containers on the deck, or I would have missed the season altogether.

I just finished for the day in the garden, 5 hrs.. WOW, Never plant Lima beans, WOW are they hard to get off the fence they grew on.. Also all the squash is cleaned up and hauled off. WOW was that a lot of work, I sprayed down a gal of fake round up and now I have to wait for my Burpee order to get here. I just love Burpee gift cert for Christmas..

I tried to clean up one of the tomatoes that sorta survived but I made a mess of it. I think I will wait to clean up the other 4 for a week till I see how much of it is dead. the Burssle sprouts loved it and have no dammage that I can see.

Time for my afternoon nap.. My hands and arms are killing me after all that work. I have 3 crushed disks in my lower back so I have to get down on my butt to work on the garden. It’s great till I get stuck and have to grab my tools to get up or I have to craw to the fence and pull myself up.. Being disabled sucks but I am sorta liking being retired after climbing telephone poles for 34 years.. I think I am getting used to this “RETIRED” thing!
Take care everyone!
Come on BURPEE...
P.S. I also got some SWEET MEAT squash I am going to try. They look sorta meaty..

Good list JADB!

Heirloom acres is another one I have had great luck with... and they respond well if there is a problem with your order!

This company has a great 2012 catalog that you can see online. It looks like they haven’t printed the 2012 catalog yet, but you can still order the 2011 catalog for $1 with a $2 coupon included.

There are lots of heirloom variety vegetables and herbs that might be hard to get elsewhere.

Still waiting on a couple more catalogs before making my final decisions, but my pre-cull list of seeds to order is already taking up 5 pages! That’s normal for me, my eyes are bigger than my pocketbook. I’ll trim that down to fit my budget later this month.

I’m trying to order with an eye toward complete self-sufficiency, so there are a lot more grains on my list than normal. Spelt, rye, hull-less oats, that sort of thing. I probably won’t get them planted this year, but I want them handy just in case I can’t order them next year.

I’m also trying to keep a close watch on what might cross-pollinate. I figure if I’m careful I can grow 7 kinds of legumes without them crossing, and 4 kinds of squash. Some catalogs don’t give the latin names, though, that makes it harder to tell what might cross and what won’t.

A question for market gardeners: if you could grow one thing to sell as your cash crop, what would it be? There’s a store here that specializes in locally-grown foods, and they’ve already said they’re willing to buy anything I bring in, so I’m trying to figure out what will bring the best price with the least extra work, but won’t be so over-abundant that everybody’s selling it. A tricky balance, I know :)

Here’s a few favorites of mine:

J.L. Hudson, Seedsman
P.O. Box 337
La Honda, CA 94020

No website - totally snail mail. Worth it, though - 95 illustration-free pages of rare seeds by botanical name.

Irish Eyes Garden Seeds

Your potatoe headquarters; always pleased with their certified stock.
********************************************************

St. Lawrence Nurseries
http://www.sln.potsdam.ny.us

Zone 3 nursery with nearly two hundred apple varieties. Other fruits, too, including a silver maple (A. saccharinum) cultivar that has twice the sap sugar content at 3-5% over the sugar maple (A. saccharum) around 2-2.5%.

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil and seeds ....and plants after that, hopefully. ;-)

Thanks for the thread JaDB, and thanks for all your work on previous threads Red.

The catalog I get is from Stokes, but most of the info. in it is way above my understanding.
I am in Canada. I'll check the list for any companies that ship to Canada. Thanks.

Well it wasn't on my bucket list, but today I picked the last of a few straggler salad greens that were left and tilled...in January...in Iowa...for the first time ever.

Well, I did not get on FR after lunch yesterday so I missed the thread. I had been at the farm the other day and stopped by the Elgin nursery and bought some bulk seed. A person sure gets their money worth buying bulk, rather than the small packets you get at the local store.
