Like all red-blooded males, Kanzi loves messing around with a barbecue. But then, as these extraordinary pictures show, Kanzi is no man. He is a bonobo - pygmy chimpanzee - and his love of fire is challenging the way that we think about our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.
For although bonobo apes and larger chimpanzees use twigs and leaves as tools, none has ever shown such skill for cooking food.
Dr Savage-Rumbaugh, of the Great Ape Trust, in Des Moines, Iowa, adds: ‘Kanzi makes fire because he wants to. He used to watch the film Quest For Fire when he was very young which was about early man struggling to control fire. He watched it spellbound over and over hundreds of times.’

The HUGE difference is that humans had no one to copy, no one to mimic and no one to teach them. When a monkey comes up with this on his own, then it is news.

Seriously, bonobos (p. paniscus) are very different from 'regular' chimpanzees (p. troglodytes). I think they deserve their own genus.

I don’t think teaching apes to do this stuff is such a good thing.......next thing you know, they’ll run for politics in the GOP and end up with a host of followers trashing everyone who doesn’t support him.........

It is impossible to note that one became POTUS without being accused of being racist. Of course I mean the “monkey see, monkey do” way he got elected. Not an original thought in his or, more importantly, his handlers’ head(s).
