A Los Alamos family is mourning the loss of their pet dog after a mountain lion attacked and killed it in their backyard on Christmas Eve.

Police Capt. Randy Foster said that when Hari Viswanathan heard the family dog, named Gwennie, barking outside and found a mountain lion trying to pull it through wooden slats in the fence, he frantically tried to get the big can to let go and even hit it over the head with a shovel.

Even after four officers responded and the dog was dead, the mountain lion wouldn't let her go,

Good thing they shot it. If it didn’t run from people after getting hit by a shovel and having 4 officers respond, it had no fear of humans. This is another problem due to the woodsy-the-owl enviroweenies. Preditors need to know who is at the top of the food chain.

Poor dog. I’d be using that cat’s hide to wipe my feet on after that.

Sorry,,

I love ol’ slab sides for self defense - but against a mountain lion I'm going to have to go with my S&W 44 mag.

A mountain lion killled (and ate) my great aunt’s dog. Then he perched himself up on her well house and refused to leave.

F&G took care of the perp.

Wait, what, they had to call F&G to figure out what to do??? Shoot, shutup and dig. What the he** is wrong with us? I remember an event (I think in Idaho) where a rancher did the right thing after killing a bear in his yard where the kids were playing and wound up in a whole bunch of trouble with F&G because he didn’t call first. Doing the right thing is a weird thing to do for some. What about the young lady who tried to “check” her gun in when going to the 9-11 memorial? Of course (hopefully) most of us know to check the gun laws in states we are going to or we avoid those states all together!!!!

About ten years ago we had trouble in my area with cougars stalking people. Fortunately, our DNR people still have enough sense to track and kill problem lions. Of course, there were the usual protests from the Earth First! attention whores, whose home base is here, but they were pretty much ignored. That was when the jerk Rodney Coronado got arrested the last time, for interfering with the hunt.

poor dog and owners. but its stupid to assign human motives of cruelty to a hungry wild animal. If it was some dirt bag kid out for “kicks”, I’d want his hide. But an animal doesn’t know hes killing someones pet, just wants to eat. I lost my 13 year old cat one night to a hungry coyote. Just broke my heart, but I knew it wasn’t personal. My fault for letting the cat out at night.

Try repeated swings with the shovel, Skippy.

They waited until F and G came? Shaking head.

I'm saying in places, due to enviroweenies, predators have lost the fear of man. This mountain lion would not have got that close to a house otherwise. My friends that live in the foothills of California have to make sure their pets aren't taken by coyotes, as has happened to neighbors. When I explained that a firearm would solve that problem they explained the huge fines and possible jail time associated with that action, thanks to the local environmentalist-passed laws. So, yes, I am.

I too just lost a cat to a coyote. I'm making it personal. Just invested in an electronic predator call and #4 buckshot for the Beretta, since it's too populated around here to use my deer rifle.

An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate in the fence and looked in, it was nice grassy, woody areas, just what a ‘huntin’ dog and man would like, but, it had a sign saying ‘no trespassing’ so they walked on. They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white robes standing there. “Welcome to Heaven” he said. The old man was happy and started in with his dog following him. The gatekeeper stopped him. “Dogs aren’t allowed, I’m sorry but he can’t come with you.”

“What kind of Heaven won’t allow dogs? If he can’t come in, then I will stay out with him. He’s been my faithful companion all his life, I can’t desert him now.”

“Suit yourself, but I have to warn you, the Devil’s on this road and he’ll try to sweet talk you into his area, he’ll promise you anything, but the dog can’t go there either. If you won’t leave the dog, you’ll spend Eternity on this road.”

So the old man and dog went on. They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate, just a hole. Another old man was inside. “S’cuse me Sir, my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?”

“Of course, there’s some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves comfortable”

“You’re sure my dog can come in? The man down the road said dogs weren’t allowed anywhere.”

“Would you come in if you had to leave the dog?”

“No sir, that’s why I didn’t go to Heaven, he said the dog couldn’t come in.
We’ll be spending Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won’t come in if my buddy here can’t come too, and that’s final.”

The man smiled a big smile and said “Welcome to Heaven.”
