Hey, I got a question and this is a BIG ole Place....
Anyone have experience in SurgTech? Is the school a bear? I am considering enrolling once I pass the A/P entrance test. I just want advice/thoughts. My local community college offers a degree or cert. A 'scrub', if you will....
I am somewhat ambidextrious and an on my feet learner.
I know what the entry level salary is. I am kinda old and have an opportunity to go back to school.
Thanks in advance. Y'all rock.
why don’t you find honest work, like being a bookie?
“why dont you find honest work, like being a bookie?”

What’s with that?
I think it could be a promising career. I haven’t worked OR in years, but with healthcare cost cutting I think you should have a lot of job security.
Have you seen this site:http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos106.htm
I think being a grave digger would be a good job for a senior.
He can laugh at every body he buries and say, “Ha, I beat you!”
....if you don't change your opinion about age, your defeated before you enroll
Not a surg tech but an OR circulating nurse so I don’t have experience with their schooling. I do know that they get paid a good deal less than RNs, and an RN diploma/associate’s take about the same length of time to complete.
With a nursing career you can work in the operating room or any other field. A CST can only work in an OR. Also techs are on their feet all day so good feet and an iron bladder are a must lol.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.
I am 43 and am finally finishing the BA degree that I started in ‘87. I have always wanted my degree in History but life, kids, work and transferring around the country always got in the way. I don’t have career plans in mind, I just felt like the is the one thing left undone.
GO for it! It’s not to late and it sounds like you are doing something you like.
I’m not a scrub but a nurse anesthetist. Where I work, they’re always hiring CSTs. Mediocre pay, long hours on your feet, & surgeons can be real douche bags. If you’re ok with that, go for it.
Its actually quite funny. I expect it from him. He’s cool.
Hitting the Like button:)
Who is the guy that is a nurse and does those very informative and interesting stories. I think he is working on an Indian Reservation in New Mexico (or some SW state) at the moment?
Sorry but your post and your byline seem to be in great conflict.
My friend is a surgeon and really appreciates the scrub techs..the OR can be fun and not always boring...going to a community college is a great way to get a career without a huge debt load....some hospitals help pay for tuition if you want to get more education.....
another consideration would be job availability in your area
Since the medical field is denominated by females.....they can be real be-itchy to work with.....yes, I am female and I am a nurse.....so if you can tune out the back stabbing and gossiping you are good to go.....
Perhaps but it’s true. There are nice guys I work with & then some who are just plain abusive. I see nothing wrong with calling that what it is.
What’s key is how one acts in response. Do we bear wrongs patiently or act out in vengeance? I’m sorry to say there’s been times I’ve allowed people to provoke a rather un-Christian response from me, but I’m slowly overcoming that with God’s grace. It’s easy to get snippy when some egomaniac is barking at you.
I take it you’ve been there, done that? There are some rather large egos in the OR. I’ve found it makes no difference if it’s in a large academic medical center or a small community hospital - surgeons are surgeons.
Most are ok, but you get several rotten apples in every bunch
I am currently dating a nurse so :p.....thankyou babe. I think she is a little jealous about me going back to school....
its you’re
lol!
