So I'm on a radio discussion board and people are bringing up Rush's use of My City Was Gone (lyrics etc). I pointed out that the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde owned a restaurant in Akron. Oops, past tense: (Oct 2011) "It is with great regret that The Vegiterranean in downtown Akron has closed its doors for the last time. This has been a labour of love for me for the last four years. We tried everything we could to keep the restaurant going but unfortunately due to the current economic climate this has not been possible...Your friend, Chrissie Hynde"
I had been in Akron earlier in the year and a friend took me to a great Italian eatery, Luigi's; he said it was right around the corner from Hynde's eatery (he'd heard THAT place wasn't too hot). Who knows, maybe the vegan food tasted more rubbery than Firestone or Goodyear products. This is the woman who once said on stage, "Are we at war yet? Bring it on, I hope the Muslims win! Down with the economic s--- this country represents!"
Maybe Obama was going to change it all, though. Maybe there would be hope for her, as a business owner. But...it was not to be. As far as I know, Luigi's (salad, sausage pizza, beer) is open and has been since the 1940s I believe.
Yes, nature HAD ways of doing just that, but now we have Nanny the big fat government that is determined not only to save them, but feed, clothe and shelter them too. [sigh]
There are people on my facebook now that are saying just that—he wasn’t what we were promised. He’s too RIGHT WING!
(they say)
It was the last thing that this highly sophisticated, conservative audience in Sacramento would ever associate with a conservative program. So it was part of being unpredictable, part of doing the unexpected, and the fact that I just happened to like it. All those three went into the decision. Now, when I came to New York and started the program nationally, that changed a lot of things. Like EMI and Chrissie Hynde had never heard of me in Sacramento and they had no idea I was using it, but when it shows up on 500 or 600 radio stations and I'm playing more than10 or 15 seconds of it (which is more than fair usage), then they want a piece .
But in my case they didn't want a piece; they didn't want me to use it. So EMI got hold of us and said, "You can't use it anymore! We will accept no amount of money. There's nothing you can pay us. You just gotta cease and desist," and the regular listeners of this program will remember that we went through a two or three week period here with different theme songs. We had to dump it. Then one day Chrissie Hynde appeared with Scott Shannon on the morning show at WPLJ, which was our FM counterpart to WABC in New York. She appeared there as a guest and Scott Shannon told her what had happened.
She was no fan of mine. You know, Chrissie is a big feminist and animal rights wacko and all that, but she had no clue that the song had been denied usage and she's telling Scott Shannon that her parents love my show. So in the end, we played tape of that 'cause the EMI people had told us that Chrissie wanted no part of me using the song. Well, here she is saying she didn't care. She told Scott Shannon of PLJ that she didn't care and her parents were fans so we got that tape, that audio; we played it for the EMI people, and the song came back to the program. We pay an annual fee -- which is fair, proper -- for usage.
vegan = food that doesn’t cast a shadow . very tough to put pictures on the menu
Thanks. I had forgotten that part of it.
“vegan = food that doesnt cast a shadow . very tough to put pictures on the menu”
Factually, it is only level 5 vegan which does not cast a shadow.
Sorry for the pop-reference :)
Can’t stand her politics but she did a great version of the song “I shall be released.”
If you put Chrissy Hynde, Pat Benatar, and Joan Jett in the same room, I wouldn’t be able to tell you who’s who.
Oh, here’s the only version of her “I shall be released” on youtube. Some guy playing drums to it. He’s pretty good too!

Guess the new song will be “My Restaurant is Gone.”
Joan Jett is the one who would be hitting on your wife.
; )
Seriously she owes a ton of her even being known today because Rush - a conservative - uses part of her Pretenders song as bumper music.
It’s the best part of the song. Non-singing guitar solo part.
She’d be a footnote and nobody would talk about her at all today if Rush didn’t use her song.
LOL......oh, ok. Well, to me they all look the same. Short dark hair and black leather. That’s pretty much it I think.
Chrissy would be the one with the largest honker.
Pat and Joan have cuter faces.
Pat would be the most attractive of the three.
Was curious to see if Akron Beacon-Journal wrote about the closing (which happened in early Oct.) Here:

EXCERPTS:
>>VegiTerranean closes after four years; lawsuit filed
By Lisa Abraham
Beacon Journal food writer
>>Chrissie Hynde rolled into town on a Harley-Davidson dressed like a waitress and bearing a platter of hors doeuvres to open her VegiTerranean restaurant in 2007.
Her departure was much less auspicious mired with debts, legal troubles and a dissolved business partnership that arose from the nationally acclaimed vegan eatery.
>>The Akron native and lead singer of the band the Pretenders, Hynde announced the closing of her restaurant Sunday, posting the following message on the restaurants website and Facebook page:
(you can see that on the link above of the restaurant’s site)
>>On Monday, Testa Builders, which owns the Northside Lofts at 21 Furnace St., where VegiTerranean was located, filed suit against the restaurant, seeking a judgment of more than $420,000 for value received and in consideration of certain construction work and services provided by Testa.
Joel Testa, chief operating officer for Testa Companies, said the lien was for money his company had put into the build-out of the restaurant, which still was not paid back, and was filed to protect the builders in case anyone else had tried to attack the restaurants assets.
>>Im heartbroken. I thought it was a fantastic restaurant, the food was incredible. I love the concept and my heart goes out to not only Chrissie its got to be very hard to close down her dream but more importantly for the staff and people who had to be sent home last night. You never like to see anybody lose their job, Testa said.
Attempts to reach Hynde for comment were not successful. Attorney Patrick J. Wack of Fairlawn, who is listed as statutory agent for the restaurant, also did not return a phone call seeking comment.
>>Summit County Common Pleas Court records show more than 20 judgment liens against the restaurant dating back to 2009 by the Ohio Department of Taxation and the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation for unpaid taxes and insurance premiums.
Jones said the IRS also has been at the business asking questions.
>>Testa said he had been working with the state to try and save the restaurant by taking it over, but that became too expensive of an effort, with more than $140,000 in back taxes owed. When we saw the breadth of them [the liens], we knew it was more than we could afford to put back into the restaurant, Testa said. We were trying to save it.
(snip)
>>Within months of opening in Akron, Duplain announced that the restaurant was eyeing locations in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Las Vegas. None of those materialized...Jones said lack of business was not the root cause of the closing.
>>>Chrissy would be the one with the largest honker.
Pat and Joan have cuter faces.
Pat would be the most attractive of the three.<<<<
Yeah, after I posted my comments I went to take a look at Joan Jett. She’s actually pretty attractive. At least back then.
“the morning show at WPLJ”
White Port and Lemon Juice!
I have a friend who’s a weedeater, and used to dine there. He said a few dishes were very good, but most were boring.
Funny characterization. They tend to evangelicize their lifestyle, except the Asians who are quiet about it.
Sounds like mis management more than anything else.
I knew I knew you from somewhere.
He doesn’t evangelize about it at all. Says everyone gets to make their own decisions. A few weeks ago, I was teasing him. Asked him why we had Canine teeth? His reply was, “We don’t need those anymore.” I guess he thinks we’ll evolve!
