You can’t bet without making a pick of time and place.

Maybe so, but I’m sticking with Thailand.

rochefort claimed, as reported by Prange, he never got the winds execute message, and therefore it seems neither did kimmel. is there a different view?

I think they’ll strike Hollywood first.

Revenge for those "Mr. Moto" films...

I’ve got tickets to this weekend’s New York Football Giants - Brooklyn Dodgers NFL game, I hope nothing happens to interrupt it.

I have a strong feeling the game will take place as scheduled. There may be some unusual announcements over the PA, however.

(In character): Unfortunately the last time they tried something against the Russians in ‘39 they got their tails kicked.

(Out of character): The Japanese did really badly at Khalkin Gol as part of a border skirmish. Japan had a light infantry army, which did well against the Chinese, or in a tropical setting. Against Soviet infantry and medium tanks, which completely outclassed Japan’s tanks, they got their clocks cleaned.

Hard to say really. The message appears to be sent to the Army and not the Navy so Rochefort could very well be telling the truth.

It really doesn’t matter anyway though when you think about it. The winds execute message, if received, called for the Japanese recipient to destroy their codes and code machines since war is about to start. There have already been direct messages ordering Japanese consulates to destroy their codes and code machines and Washington and Hawaii have been made privy of this information. So the winds execute message, if it were to be sent, would be redundant anyway.

USS Lexington sails with Task Force 12 to ferry Marine aircraft to Midway, leaving no carriers at Pearl Harbor. (Dave Shirlaw)

It also resulted in the rest of the fleet being called back INTO Pearl.

SOP was to always keep half the Pacific Fleet at sea, so long as the carriers were with them to screen and scout. When the carriers were gone (Lex to Midway with fighters, Enterprise to Wake with fighters, Saratoga on the West Coast for an overhaul) the remaining fleet was pulled back into Pearl so that the USAAF could provide protective cover.
