Verona, PA Friday evening, during an appearance on Fox News Channel's "On the Record" with Greta Van Susteren, Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum challenged former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to a Lincoln-Douglas style debate in Iowa. The debate challenge was issued after former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney refused to debate Gingrich in a Human Events/RedState debate in Washington, DC.
Senator Santorum said: Newts been campaigning on doing Lincoln-Douglas style debates and I think its a great idea - Count me in. The voters deserve more than 60 second sound bites, they deserve substance and real solutions to the problems facing our nation. This will be a great opportunity for the people of Iowa to learn more about us, our records, and our vision for America. Newt and I have been friends for 20 years, so this will be fun. Game on.
Mike Biundo, Santorum Campaign Manager, said: Speaker Gingrich is an ideas politician, but that doesnt mean all his ideas are good an individual mandate for health care, amnesty for illegal immigrants, and Wall Street bailouts align closely with Barack Obama. Senator Santorum is a conviction candidate who has a record of consistent conservative successes, and he will put that record and his vision for a brighter America up against anyone.
That’s easy talk when you’re on the bottom of the pile...now that Newt’s on top he’ll be too “busy”...
That dog don't hunt either now that Newt's already agreed to go one-on-one with Huntsman.
Why would the Grinch run from a debate. After all, he is supposed to be the smartest man in the world. He debated Cain.
I am not a Santorum fan. But I’d love to watch that debate.
Read the true account of what happened for yourself, since you seem to have such a fixation on it;

He will run and hide at Tiffany’s
He will run and hide at Tiffany’s
He will run and hide at Tiffany’s
He will run and hide at Tiffany’s
Good one.
You must be confused, but then again, that's hardly a surprise.

Better yet, here's my posting history at FR:

Why don't you read through it and tell me what I said that makes you believe I have some type of fixation on it?
I may make the odd comment in regards to Newt's infidelities from time to time when it applies. For example on this thread you posed a (cheap shot) hypothetical as to why the Gingrich campaign had yet to respond to the challenge. I simply posed a hypothetical of my own in response.
Thanks again for bumping the thread. A lot more people are going to read about Santorum's challenge through your efforts :-)
Conservative talk radio will be all over this the next few days. The Grinch will have to respond one way or another.
Conservative talk radio will deliver the Grinch’s response to tens of millions of listeners across the country.
Levin has been particularly sympathetic to Santorum (and Bachmann) as of late; if nothing else I hope he mentions it. I think Hannity has already bought into the conventional wisdom that it’s already down to Newt/Romney, although in fairness to Sean, he did have Santorum on last week, too.
I was on the Cain Train to a Better American but due to a breakdown, I transferred at Santorum Station. We are now full speed ahead and am looking forward to reaching our destination on time
This temp service thing is not good. Caused me to post 4 times the same thing.
I really like listening to Levin. If the Grinch turns down Santorum, talk radio host, especially Levin will be able to go after the Grinch. And I hope they rip the Grinch a new one, if he turns down Santorum.
Acording to Newt, he is the one who wanted and asked for the divorce:

That story wasn’t just made up. His ex-wife told it to a magazine and a newspaper separately (Mother Jones and the Washington Post). If I had to guess whether the wife got the story right 6 years later, or the next week or the daughter got it right 30 years later, I’d probably go with the wife.
Her quote to the Post:
He can say that we had been talking about [a divorce] for 10 years, but the truth is that it came as a complete surprise, says Jackie Gingrich, in a telephone interview from Carrollton. Hes a great wordsmith
He walked out in the spring of 1980 and I returned to Georgia. By September, I went into the hospital for my third surgery. The two girls came to see me, and said Daddy is downstairs and could he come up? When he got there, he wanted to discuss the terms of the divorce while I was recovering from the surgery
To say I gave up a lot for the marriage is the understatement of the year.
Then there’s this quote from Gingrich:
Asked if, in fact, he handled the divorce as insensitively as portrayed, Gingrich responded: All I can say is when youve been talking about divorce for 11 years and youve gone to a marriage counselor, and the other person doesnt want the divorce, Im not sure there is any sensitive way to handle it.
That doesn’t sound like she requested the divorce.

Shit, you should have just said so. Let me help you out more then. Fearless .01% challengers ALWAYS want a debate. Hahahaha. That oughta be a real squeaker, too, huh? Mr. Charisma should KO Newt in the first round. How many pings would you like?
You think that is something that Newt wouldn’t WANT promoted?
Hahahahaha. Have another sixer, Joe.

He may not have the numbers (yet), but IMHO, Rick is by far, the best of the lot.
I was 13 years old, and we were about to leave Fairfax, Va., and drive to Carrollton, Ga., for the summer. My parents told my sister and me that they were getting a divorce as our family of four sat around the kitchen table of our ranch home. Soon afterward, my mom, sister and I got into our light-blue Chevrolet Impala and drove back to Carrollton.
Later that summer, Mom went to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta for surgery to remove a tumor. While she was there, Dad took my sister and me to see her.
It is this visit that has turned into the infamous hospital visit about which many untruths have been told. I won’t repeat them. You can look them up online if you are interested in untruths. But here’s what happened:
My mother and father were already in the process of getting a divorce, which she requested.
Dad took my sister and me to the hospital to see our mother.
She had undergone surgery the day before to remove a tumor.
The tumor was benign.
As with many divorces, it was hard and painful for all involved, but life continued.
As have many families, we have healed; we have moved on.
We are not a perfect family, but we are knit together through common bonds, commitment and love.
My mother and father are alive and well, and my sister and I are blessed to have a close relationship with them both.
My sister and I feel that it is time to move on, close the book on this event and focus on building a great future. We will not answer additional questions or make additional comments regarding this meaningless incident, which occurred more than three decades ago.
As I said, my mother is a private person. She will not give media interviews. She deserves respect and should be allowed to live in peace.
