What a creative and stirring tribute to our brave men and women who have served and are serving. It will bring a tear to your eye.
WVU Marching Band Armed Services Salute
Wow! I have never seen a marching band that is so fluid with movement. They really are the cat’s meow. Thanks for letting me view this, Rushy!
Is that not KEWL? Hehehe!
You know what I tried to do? I actually made the screen larger to see if there were “X’s” on the field (so the band could line up so perfectly). I can only imagine the hours upon hours upon hours of practice. Whoever choreographs WV marching bands routine is pure genius!

It used to be done ‘by hand’ and ‘stepping out’ the field positions from the yard lines. I think a lot of it is done with the help of a computer, now (as far as the creation of a show)....but the peeps have to execute it. Talk about using your ‘peripheral vision’ when marching. ;-)
I can remember my relative (who was a band director) writing out all of the various parts from a given score by hand. Used to help him. VERY time consuming. Now, they use a computer program called Sibelius which is pretty darned helpful. It can also transpose and re-write certain parts to be more ‘helpful’ to the player if the piece is difficult so it all blends in. Amazing, really.
Marching bands do not play both sides of the field. It’s one side or the other. At an away game, they play to the home (away) side. At home, they play to their own side. I know this as I have many years of marching band experience. I don’t know what the Coast Guard formation is supposed to be, but I am going to find out! it doesn’t make sense that this marching band would do their show with one and ONLY one of the military branches up side down. I agree, though, it DOES look upside down, but as marching bands go, it just doesn’t make sense.
