You know what I tried to do? I actually made the screen larger to see if there were “X’s” on the field (so the band could line up so perfectly). I can only imagine the hours upon hours upon hours of practice. Whoever choreographs WV marching bands routine is pure genius!

It used to be done ‘by hand’ and ‘stepping out’ the field positions from the yard lines. I think a lot of it is done with the help of a computer, now (as far as the creation of a show)....but the peeps have to execute it. Talk about using your ‘peripheral vision’ when marching. ;-)

I can remember my relative (who was a band director) writing out all of the various parts from a given score by hand. Used to help him. VERY time consuming. Now, they use a computer program called Sibelius which is pretty darned helpful. It can also transpose and re-write certain parts to be more ‘helpful’ to the player if the piece is difficult so it all blends in. Amazing, really.
