A gun-toting man on a bicycle in South Florida shot and killed a Doberman Saturday, saying the dog was threatening him.
Dan Abou, who was training the 2-year-old to be a therapy dog, acknowledged Scooby was in his unfenced front yard without a leash, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported. But he described Scooby as a gentle animal and said many dogs are allowed out without restraints in his neighborhood in Davie with no problems.
"It's very alarming that someone would be riding a bike with a gun at 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day," Abou said Friday. "That man came here looking for trouble. I still can't believe this."
Police were investigating the shooting. Investigators say the cyclist had a permit for his gun.
The Doberman Rescue League of Broward took Scooby in after the emaciated dog was found on the street. Abou adopted him in July and planned to use him as a therapy dog at senior citizens centers.
Thanks Joe. Always sad when someone loses their pet, but scary to one possibly being attacked. I agree that Mace or Pepper Spray would be a better alternative for all.
But he has the very leftist, and very anti-gun Sun-Sentinel to do a sympathetic story.
According to local law the dog still has to be leashed or behind a fence.

I’m an avid cyclist, usually alone on back country roads. If I am on my bike(not racing)I’m armed. Usually can out run the dogs..never caught by one yet..but you never know when.

I love animals but, forget the laws, common sense says keep them fenced or chained up and not free to run the neighborhood. I wouldn't want a Chihuahua free let alone a Dobie.
I don't blame the poor dog, I blame the owner who is dumber than the dog.
When I rode, dogs were a problem, I see some things don't change???
Notice how they go for emotion to mention he was training the dog to be a therapy dog. I wonder what the slant would be if it were a Pit and I trust Pits more than dobies.
An unleashed dog in an unfenced front yard IS most definitely running loose.
Agreed, however, this is possibly in an “urban” type setting. It’s possible this man packs in case he runs into HUMAN troublemakers. Not saying they couldn’t do with just mace also, but humans might keep “going for it” and need to be shot through.
I’m sure someone will suggest he wear several types of weapons and be well-adapted to grabbing all of them as appropriate.
That seems perfectly reasonable. Sounds like a fine would have been in order.
Dog owner completely at fault here...
Every parent of a child mauled to death by the family pet says the same thing.
“The impact broke my helmet in three places.”
3 places huh?
Son, I say Son I really think I would invest in a better helmet. 3 places huh?
Sounds like the standard line we hear in pit bull stories..."he was such a gentle animal...a good boy." Then keep him inside your own damn house.
There is most certainly a difference between a dog that stays on his owners property and one roaming out on the street. According to the story the dog was in the yard. If the cyclist is in the street and the dog is in the yard, how is the dog drawing fire? I would be curious to know if the guy on the bike was either a gang banger or a cop.
He loved to scratch his back under one of my great grandfather's wagons. He'd lean up into the axle and rub back and forth until his itch was gone.
Then he'd growl 'cause it was meal time, and he'd go catch something to eat.
That dog scared the heck out of me.
I live in a town with a 'leash law'. If the dog is on the owner's property WITHOUT a leash; it is said to be under the owner's control, and NOT in violation of the leash law. Of course, when the unleashed dog sees a cat...
If I lived in South florida, everytime I left my house I would have my gun.

Good grief. I didn’t read if it was day or night but glad I don’t have to worry about things like that........yet!!
Had a little run-in with a dog on Thanksgiving morning myself. I’ve been running lately, and was running through an older neighborhood when I heard a large dog barking. Sure enough, there was a German Shepherd chained up next to the house. No problem. But there was also a little terrier in the yard, and he wasn’t chained. As terriers are fond of doing, he barked at me, and then circled around behind me as I ran by, no doubt hoping to nip at my heels. I just turned at him, waved my arms at him and yelled “rarrarrarr ruff ruff” at him (dog language). He backed off and returned to his yard, and I kept running.
I don’t carry a sidearm when I’m running, but I always have my knife handy. I don’t suspect that I’d need it with a little runt dog, but if a put bull or mean shepherd decides that I look like dinner, I’m going to use it.
There used to be a small revolver called a Velo Dog marketed to cyclists just for this purpose.
