There are those who believe we must guard and protect children from the hurts and traumas of the big bad world for as long as possible. Then there are those people who believe we should toughen kids up by exposing them to and even pummeling them with terror and depravity. Those people become children’s filmmakers. Don't believe me? Gaze upon the list below and find a hall of horrors to give Wes Craven nightmares...

Seriously, who really believes Dumbo and E.T. are "traumatic" to children? A couple of the movies on the lists are stinkers (not scary, just lousy movies), but most of them are genuine classics that I loved as a kid.

BTW, apparently Babble is some sort of parenting magazine or something. I saw the link on Yahoo on a related "great films to watch with your kids" story (which includes E.T. - take that, Babble!)

The scene where Dumbo visits him mama in jail is traumatic to me today. I can’t watch it without bawling.

E.T. may not be traumatic, but it sure sucks.

The one film on the list I would concede isn’t really age appropriate for kids, despite the “G” rating, is the Mysterious Stranger segment on the Mark Twain Claymation film. It’s very well done, but it really is more appropriate for teens and up.

The rest of the writer’s list still stinks, though. I loved Old Yeller!

I haven’t recovered from Dumbo. I still can’t watch it.

Cole Gamble sits down when he pees. I’m sure of it.

The little boy, who did the voice for Bambi, for the fire scene had been told that his mother was kidnapped and was instructed to call out her name so she could be located.

He’s fine now.

DUMBO
Sometime during his reign, Walt Disney turned to his staff of animators and said, "You know, boys, scientists aren't going to invent LSD for decades, but kids clamor to trip out NOW! It is our civic duty to blow the minds of American children.”

LSD was created in the 1930s. But liberals think the Baby Boomers invented everything from rock and roll to desegregation efforts and even sex.

I got to “The Dark Crystal” and realized the author has no idea what he is talking about. TDC was NEVER designed to be a kid’s movie. It was ALWAYS aimed at adults — roof that Henson could create a story and characters with some heft.

The whole list stinks (as do some of the movies), but I love Song of the South and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Song of the South apparently is only considered racist in America. IIt was available on legit release home video in Europe, Hong Kong, and Japan.

Some of the movies listed are fantastic. I love Wizard of Oz, E.T., Willy Wonka (the original, not the really weird Johnny Depp one) etc... A great movie for older elementary school/middle school kids is called “Holes”. Many of them read it in middle school and the theatrical production is very good.

Actually, I had nightmares about the wicked witch of the west in the Wizard of Oz. My Mom had an acquaintance who looked like her, and I hid behind my Mom. I think that neither of them knew, but in those days, kids were seen and not heard.

I’m with ya, especially on the original Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder was perfect in the part and Depp (who I generally like)...wasn’t.

Plus, anything with Jack Albertson in it is automatically worth watching to me (loved that crusty old buzzard!)

I didn’t pull up each one, but I noticed Old Yeller.

Heck, one worse than that — Shane. Talk about abandonment issues: ‘Shane. Shane .... Come Back!’

Not even a sequel.

The scene with Dumbo’s mom locked up is very traumatic, the movie has been changed, the mom died in the original.
Bambi is equally as bad, I remember seeing the Mom lying on the ground with blood on her shoulder, saying “run Bambi run”.
