Carrie Fisher slams William Shatner's claims Star Trek is better than Star Wars

It is the debate that has been raging between generations of science fiction fans.

But Star Trek star William Shatner believed he had delivered the coup de grace two months ago when he delivered a stinging critique he thought proved his franchise was superior.

But there is a new hope for Star Wars fans, as original cast member Carrie Fisher has struck back with a rebuke that could return the Jedi-filled universe back to prominence.

In a somewhat rambling YouTube video, the Princess Leia star let rip on the rival sci fi favourite.

She said: 'They are not in the same league. i mean they have the word star in the title, and there is space travel.

'Where do they go to, Klingon? It just sounds like a laundry detergent.'

The successful actress and author had a list of grievances with the television and movie franchise that she said made it inferior, including lacklustre visuals, make-up, toys and video games.

She said: 'Show me a special effect, maybe they are just effects, they are not called special effects.

Two DIFFERENT presentation realities to say the least.

I remember being completely surprised, along with the rest of the theater audience, when the first trailer for the Star Wars ep IV Special Edition was shown prior to another sci-fi movie we were seeing.

It showed a TV, with rapidly approaching X-Wing on the screen and a voice-over saying "This is how an entire generation has experienced Star Wars".

Then the X-Wing flew out of the "TV" screen and into full-movie screen size. It was awesome; there was a collective gasp from the audience followed by massive cheering.

Star Trek is also done on a Hollywood BIG screen budget and made for the huge Panavision metroplex screens. The last Star Trek movie alone cost $150 million to produce and the special effects rival anything Star Wars did. I'll put up Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact, and the 2009 film against any Star Wars and they give them a good run for epicness.

While both the Star Trek and Star Wars movies have been pretty sucessful, Star Trek television shows are classic emmy-awarding material and some of the most memorial TV stories of all time, whereas Star Wars on television is ridiculed and unwatchable.

Carrie Fisher and William Shatner were comparing their entire franchises as a whole, not the first production in each.

Star Wars is more cinematic, more legendary, but also more remote because it is so big screen and mythic.

Star Trek is closer to its audience, and -- if one can say it about outer space adventures -- more down to earth.

The small screen, and the small budgets of the original series, make it more intimate and -- again, if it makes sense to talk that way about science fiction -- more a part of our own world.

I agree—if filmed right Flash Gordon could be a new Star Wars, but it would need to be done with all the magic of modern special effects—with the art of the comic strip. The stories would be good as well—but who could play Flash? What modern star could pull it off? Better yet, who is evil enough to play Ming?

Season One of Space:1999 was magnificent compared to ST and SW.

I have very little recollection of Space:1999 from my youth. With all the streaming options lately, I went searching to find someplace to watch it, but didn't find anything. Granted the search was not very extensive. Any idea where I can see some Space:1999 episodes now??

Why does everyone hate “Spock’s Brain”? I thought it was a cool episode. I’ll admit I couldn’t figure out how his brain would “fit” into that rectangular black box. Seems like they would have to squeeze it in. I loved McCoy’s face when he’s getting the knowledge from the “teacher” helmet. One of DeForest Kelley’s best performances. “A CHILD could do it!” It was nice of McCoy to replace the top of Spock’s head after putting the brain back in and neatly comb his hair, too.

I'm still having trouble accepting the 10th Dr. I guess I just liked David Tennant too much.

My absolute favorite Star Trek was The Journey Home. My favorite moment was when the orca-ologist (I know, I know) jumped on Kirk as he was about to transport inside the Bird of Prey with the line “You didn’t think I was going to let you take George and Gracy without me, did ya?” And she goes into the future Federation Universe.

My dad watched a show from the ‘50s called Tom Corbett, Space Cadet. Now THAT was low budget cheese!. Although the real Tom Corbett is a pretty good governor.

Good point that I hadn’t considered! “The Way to Eden” is very apt, even today. A bunch of mush headed hippies being led by some insane old guy with kooky ideas about a Utopia. And when the find their “paradise” it turns out to be poisonous and deadly. Those “hippies” probably became conservatives after that!
