Are 5in heels a step too far for women's health?

I think many people are taking this way too seriously!

Shoes are for fun - I that’s why they’re called “accessories” - and even the wearer of a 5-inch heel probably only does so on limited occasions (although in practice this may mean going to work in them every day for the 3 or 4 months that they remain in fashion). But it’s NO BIG DEAL!

And I don’t think it says a thing about one’s morality. Probably most of the females at OWS have never worn a high heel in their lives, but that sure doesn’t make them moral in any way, not even sexually, judging by the diseases that seem to be thriving down at Zuccotti Park.

As for health, obviously, that depends on the person. Somebody who wears high heels of the right size and is in reasonably good shape otherwise should be just fine. One of the causes of the bunions of our mothers and grandmothers is that women refused to wear shoes of the right size because having a small foot was thought to be a sign of - well, I don’t know what, but apparently it was a good thing...

Well, I consider it a personal decision. If you want to wear the, fine. If not, fine. The world is big enough for all of us.

I hate heels. I’ve never worn anything but flats or modest heels for a special occasion.

On the upside, my feet look amazing. My kids say I should be a foot model. I wouldn’t go that far but they look a damn sight younger than 48. Lol.

And toning your calves with actual exercise is the way to go.

No they're not - they're called 'shoes'.

"And I don’t think it says a thing about one’s morality."

Neither do I, per say, but I think towering heels have earned the label "stripper heels" for a reason.

Maybe consider, the next boots you get, would be from a manufacturer, who will repair them for you. I've been at the customer service dept. at Double L in Freeport, Maine, when a lady in front of me was bringing in her gum-bottoms to be repaired...she didn't want to let them go....it was charming...it was like she was saying good-bye to a family member.

Technically speaking, for hiking the classic Bean boots are nothing to brag about...but are great for sloshing-around conditions...but Double L does a nice /reasonably priced job with repairs. I like the fact that they are still made in Maine.

I love everything you said! I don’t understand why women have bought into this AT all! It just goes to show you how mindless people are that they will latch onto some fad or trend just because some ditzy celebrity wears something.

I quit wearing high heels years ago. I also need to wear round toe boxes due to Morton’s Neuroma. Being petite I liked to wear high heels, but even in my 20s I NEVER wore those stiletto heels. I told someone awhile ago that I think they were designed by Hannibal Lecter.

...there ought to be a law requiring a helmet while wearing these.

Several years ago the fashion was very tall platform shoes; a young girl in Japan fell off her shoes and died when her head struck a curb.

One of the guys I worked with a few years back brought in a pair of the shoes worn by a Chinese woman who had had her feet bound. I literally gasped when I saw the tiny size of the shoes. I think people need to wake up. The purpose is to make the woman a toy/plaything. She is completely dependent. It’s scary.

A higher heel makes the leg look longer and better. Exaggerated heels - for stage performances, shall we say - obviously exist for this reason.

As late as the 18th century, btw, before men started to wear trousers and were still wearing “britches” and stockings, men also wore heels, usually about 2” or so.

It’s all about fashion! Naturally, the liberal librarian and the OWS vegan will be stomping around in their Crocs and Birkenstocks, but that’s also all about fashion - for their crowd.

You kid yourself. I have a friend who owns dozens of pairs of these shoes. She wears them to work every day. And she’s in her 50’s just like me. I think it’s ridiculous.

I hear Ballerina shoes are very healthy.

Just add heels.

...and to be extra attractive,...make them 6" heels while we're at it....(hehehehe)

I remember signing up for Frederick’s of Hollywood catalog just to laugh at fetishized pictures like this one and the porno clothes some women wore—never saw a woman actually wearing the clothes or shoes. Such ridiculous shoes were once just for streetwalkers...

If she’s in her 50s and has been wearing these every day, what’s the problem? That doesn’t mean you have to wear them, but it doesn’t mean she shouldn’t.

Livius, I don’t think the issue is with HEELS. I like kitten heels and a little bit of heel myself. I don’t think flats (true flats) are all that comfy to wear all day - they give little arch support. The point is the 5 inch heels. They are dangerous. It’s not just that a woman can fall or twist her ankle; or cause spine issues. Suppose you had to make a quick getaway? I also hate flip flops for the same reason.

No, but what’s the purpose? They cost around $350 a pair and more. She does buy on sale though.
