The surreal part of the article:
About 30 minutes before Brandl ordered Old Glory removed from its elevated perch, Snyder said the bridge workers intended to take it down after the holiday weekend.
But Brandl said safety could not wait. "It was not authorized, and we do not need the distraction," he said, adding, "I can't imagine who it would offend, but I do not want controversy."
And right there, in a nutshell, is the problem.
It’s so sad that you kind of laugh bittersweetly.
“Controversy” brings lawsuits. Maybe we need a law to regulate lawyers ....
I've been around a lot of drilling rigs and every rig has a flag
The frack tanks have flags and a few of us had flags between our teactor and the trailor (sand can)
I've passed a few flags in my travels and I have given a military salute and held it 'til I passed by.
This article is just another piece of evidence varifying how deep the enemy is embedded in our culture/politics and lives.
Brandl, The Man Without a Country
The article says “IDOT”.
I think they misspelled it: “IDiOT” seems more appropriate.
And the iron workers quiesced? Pu$$ies.
That last word there was my exact thought.
Whoops - acquiesced
I bet if it were the gay (fag) rights flag all would be ok.
“this is the day for thanks and a day to remember the ones that that made it home and the ones that gave all for their country..it is my belief that all veterans should have the day off with pay. this is the day that i remember my father who fought in Vietnam and did not make it home and the Marines that i fought with and bled with. some of whom did not make it home. the price for freedom is not free.thanks to all that have and are serving for this great country of ours. god bless america. Shortly thereafter the plant manager took him aside and said, in effect, if he ever sent out an email like that again he would be summarily fired. Probably the part about “day off with pay” set him off. The email “to all” reached up to the highest corporate levels.
Too bad they didn’t simply reposition the flag to the Illinois side of the span and tell Brandl to go buy a vowel (in slightly harsher language).
...he should write another email referring to the first email and resend it explaining he meant for him alone and if he upset anyone previously he was truly sorry and because he was threaten with termination he thought it best to let everyone know and wanted to clear it up.....
(now you know why I’ve been suspended a few times....of course recovering pay at a later date))
Certainly wish I had the plant manager’s email address. He would get an e-mail from me that would really blister his butt from the get-go. What a dimwitted jerk he must be!
Very true. Somewhere along the line "land of opportunity" got perverted into "land free of offense." Well excuse me people, no-one ever promised you a life where no-one would offend your delicate sensibilities. In fact, such a promise cannot be made, well, cannot be kept.
In short people, you are going to be offended. Guess what, you are going to offend others, intentionally or not. Get over it you worthless pantiwastes. Go cry to your mother, 'cause I guarantee you no-one else really gives a damn.
As to the specific case here. If anyone, at any time, any day, and in any setting, is offended by our flag ... fine. The border exits are open, you are free to leave, but old glory is not coming down to suit your tastes - ever.
Care to name the company so I can be sure I never buy anything from them?
Incidentally, the privately owned company I worked for used to hold a company meeting on Veterans Day and honor all the vets. They sold out to a venture capital firm out of Boston. Most of the vets got terminated and replaced by kids just out of college, They no longer honor the few who are left.
Who knew our flag was a distraction?

Thank you for your remarks regarding Veterans Day. It is clearly a matter of the highest import that men like yourself have, thoughout our history, sacrificed greatly to keep us free.
As for a day off, whether with or without pay I believe it is best for each of us to honor the day in our own way while using the very freedoms we enjoy. As such, you are free to take the day off with pay by making it one of your vacation days. I’ve done that on September 11 a couple times. Understand, however, that whenever you miss a day here, you are missed.
Lastly, I see that you’ve communicated your remarks on a wide scale, including everyone in the company. This may be met with a some resistance inasmuch as the “send to all” function is reserved for matters pertaining to business. Should anyone confront you about this please understand it is simply a matter of discipline on a much smaller scale than you’ve endured as a soldier.
