Sandusky "distraught" over Paterno retirement, developments at Penn State
Centre Daily Times ^ | Nov 9, 2011 | Kevin Cirilli

Posted on 11/09/2011 3:05:27 PM PST by Second Amendment First

The attorney representing former Penn State coach and The Second Mile founder, Jerry Sandusky, said his client learned of Coach Joe Paterno’s announcement he will retire, and is “distraught” over the latest developments at Penn State.

While Sandusky maintains he is innocent, “he is saddened by what is happening to the reputation of Penn State,” Amendola said. “He feels absolutely awful. They’re taking down an entire athletic department."

Amendola said he spoke Wednesday morning with Sandusky, who is still at his State College residence, which is staked out by media. Amendola said he's already at work on Sandusky’s defense, and is still in the early stages of assembling a team. He declined to comment further on the case.

“Jerry and I are both saddened by the rush to judgement,” he said. “Much more is going to come out in our defense.” Amendola noted that some recent news reports have indicated that Sandusky confessed wrongdoing in regards to an alleged 1998 incident with a boy in a shower. “Jerry never said that, but he did apologize for being in the shower — not for sexual activity,” Amendola said.

Right... According to his own testimony, though, Paterno was told that it involved Sandusky and some 10 year old kid in the showers at 9:30 at night...

I guess that’s not specific enough to give a damn, though.

You tesitified to the GJ three years ago and still allowed Sandusky to dole out the candy. I’m just curious what Sandusky knows about you?

Someone said (I have no idea where I heard this, sorry) that Sandusky was on campus as late as LAST WEEK! I also heard he was seen at a closed practice in 2007 or 2008 with a young boy.

In announcing his retirement, Paterno said “I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.”

Did you get that from ESPN, or from one of my posts on another Joe Paterno topic? Because I've posted it and was sickened.

You and I think alike.

Parents of young men have been entrusted to his care for over 40 years. If only the parent(s) of that young boy who was anally raped had been formally entrusted to Paterno, maybe he would have done was was morally required and not just the bare minimum of what was legally required.

ESPN and other sources. He wasn't just on campus. He was in the athletic building weight room. Not a place where all student have access. The one where he had special access as a coach emeritus.

“Simply put the national obsession with football took precedence over the sexual abuse of a child and protecting the coach, the team, and the university was the most important thing.
No one should be allowed to ‘retire’ with benefits. Everyone involved should serve prison time and the university should be sued out of existence!”

Exactly. There is no way that there is anyone in this “chain” from the assistant coach up to the top that can claim that they didn't know. There was a cover up and they were all involved.

Heard the football program pulls in $70 million a year for the school. Money talks,,,everything else walks.

BigE: Shultz was VP of Finance. The university police report to him, but he doesn’t control them in the sense that he is an investigator or is in operational control. He is the administrator charged with oversight. NewinTexsas is correct.

“You’re going to leave Joe Paterno off of that list?”

My bad. I thought he was on it.

Coach McQueary
Coach Paterno
Various elementary and high school officials

The same can be said of all big name football coaches at successful big time football programs. They answer to nobody.

Maybe at one time this was true. But Joe Paterno is the last of those coaches. Nobody writes his own ticket the way Joe has done over the years. I feel pretty confident in saying that. Show me another major football program that would have put up with Joe's mediocre record in recent years. PSU is a second-tier program in the Big Ten most years. Every few years they challenge, but rarely do they win the conference. Not the kind of success one would expect.

Question. Sandusky was THE #1 defensive coach in the nation in his peak. Someone brought up the suggestion that he word was put out at the time of his retirement such that no other college was interested in making him an offer? If we had more on this, we could include all the coaches in the NCAA on the list?

As we all know, the reality was that they all reported to Joe Paterno, including the school president. If JoePa walked into the board of trustees and demanded the president be fired, they would fire him. If Spanier walked into the board of trustees and demanded that Paterno be fired, he would be laughed out of the room.

I hadn’t initially been following this story,,but what brought it to the forefront at this time? Did a victim come forward ?

Penn students...Paterno...that he did nothing wrong...

Well, except for that extra word verbiage that I didn't highlight...they got Paterno pegged: "He did nothing..."

And that, class, was precisely the problem!

I think it was a culmination of the Grand Jury presentment coupled with enough investigation into the victims and counts/charges

I saw one article that says Sandusky has known about some of the more recent charges going back 3 yrs or almost 3 yrs. So they've been working on this for a while now.

Ah, very interesting angle. Sandusky, 55 at the time...would have still been considered a "prime" head coach candidate. Yet he "retired."

He could have gone elsewhere.

As I've said elsewhere, this has all the "marks" of a "coerced" retirement..."Retire or else."

A limited circle knew about the '98 stuff involving Sandusky. I would think it had to include the AD, Asst AD, VP, Prez, Paterno, & perhaps some asst coaches.
