SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/99.7 Now) Its a question many of us ask when we go out to a restaurant. How much should I tip? Whether your service is good or bad, San Francisco Restaurant workers want to implement a 25% standard tip onto your bill for you. Is this fair?
Many in the food industry say yes, its about time. However, many foodies are not as happy with the idea. According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, for the most part, people, on average tip between 15% 20% and the restaurant worker actually has to claim 15% of that to the IRS.
Opinions that sway against the increase said that the whole purpose of a tip is to reward service. They feel the new tip increase should be earned and if more is needed, then they must step up their service so that the increase justifies a larger tip amount.
Not everyone is against the idea. Some have felt with the state of the nations economy is in, that 25% is not unreasonable. And some tip above the average already. Some went a step further to say if you want to reward service, you must start tipping the workers at fast food places as well. Most fast food workers earn minimum wage and rarely get tips
Well , again we ask Ronald Reagan what to do, “ Reagan vote with your feet.”
That way slobbering heroin addicts with various STD’s(poor souls) can work and get paid after letting the sleepy slime drip on our food..I mean they need to make it too...
There goes the restaurant business...restaurants are for the rich....new slogan for SF activist
Freudian slip. "Buy" should be "by."
Well, I guess we are turning into Europe.
Anyone there with any get up and go, got up and left 400 years ago.
Agree and correctly...”market will decide whether it will work”
The problem I have is how much to tip the wait staff when we go to a buffet-type place or a brunch where they bring beverages and take away plates as we work thru the courses.
The service level is less that a full-service restaurant so I think it should be less than 20%... but what is the standard?
Europeans HATE tipping. Especially the Brits. They are absolutely insane on the topic.
but under that gratuity, there was a line I could fill out that said additional gratuity(which I lined out)....
I do believe that 20% was sufficient and even asking for additional gratuity was nervy....and had I wanted to give an addional gratuity I would have approached the maître d'
Then I guess we’d better start tipping at the DMV, too.
Oh wait, that means our decline toward third-world status would be complete!
I noticed, with the tip cup showing up at Starbucks that it started showing up everywhere. I’ve NEVER put money in one of those cups. I tip at sit-down restaurants where I am actually being waited on. Tipping when I order something from someone behind a counter?! That is bad stewardship.
None of the Blacks I ever worked with would leave a tip....it was quite difficult going to a restaurant with them...the rest of us would have to pony up for them...
Let us assume a diner has 1000 budgeted for dining out for a year, and let us further assume that he typically eats a 30 dollar meal. Let us find out how that works out, mathematically.
30 plus typical 15% = 34.50. That means he can afford to eat out 28.9 times in that year. Let us round and say 29 times.
Now, with 30 plus the new 25% tip = 37.50. That means he can afford to eat out 26.6 times a year, but again, let us round and we have 27.
There are two less instances of him being able to eat out, now. So where does the money come from to cover those two times? Oh, I know, Obama's new RestaurantCare plan.
Here in New Jersey, unlike in most states, the concept of BYOB is flourishing. Liquor licenses are fixed in number and are sold privately, in many cases for hundreds of thousands of dollars. So, most smaller restaurants do not offer wine, and they encourage you to bring your own, which they happily uncork, chill (if necessary) and provide stemware, all for free. So, that twenty dollar bottle of wine that I bought in the liquor store only costs me twenty bucks in the restaurant, and I don’t even have to tip on it, although the extra service does command a decent gratuity.
Does Mickey D have a tip jar? I see tip jars more and more in fast food places. What amazes me about the tip jars is that they are always full. Americans are so generous!
—buffet-type place or a brunch —
The asian place in my small town makes you pay BEFORE you sit down. Makes it pretty easy. That said, my rule of thumb is that if the person getting my plates is prompt, friendly, and improves my experience, I’ll actually give my standard 20%. If the plates stack up (not a big deal) or they are unfriendly or mechanical, I give no tip.
Usually I give no tip at a buffet. I lump them in with McDonalds.
Americans tip way too much. I tip 20% where it is appropriate, or nothing at all when we’re talking “tip cup”. The latter is just dumb.
To leftists the problem with prices is then everyone pays the same no matter their income or minority status. Prices aren't progressive. Rich people would get off easy, low income black people would have to pay more. No fair!
I usually leave $5 at the table, just like I do w/ delivery.
Well, just because Brits are cheap doesn’t mean blacks are not. My problem is with black women in restaurants. They can be unbearably rude to the waiters. I don’t know why this is.
—So, that twenty dollar bottle of wine that I bought in the liquor store...—
You pay $20 for MD 20/20?!
What a ripoff. BTW, remember, it’s MD 20/20 GOLD with chicken. Red with beef.
Be careful what you say about mail-people. Say anything bad and there's some crazy freeper who will fill your FRmailbox with nastygrams. LOL
