Tariffs look closer to $28 billion, not $132 billion.
Thanks for the link.

Don't make stupid claims and I won't have any reason to argue.

even the blind can see whats happening to our country.

And some think the solution is even bigger government.

I happen to disagree.

I don’t think we should do any of those things.
I also don’t think the solution to big government’s problems is to give government more power.

On your tombstone it will read -—

“He was a big government lover until the end even though it impoverished his sons and daughters and ruined his community and shut down half the factories. He was a man of principles. Idiotic principles and Obama proved this”

I believe in free trade amongst the 50 states. I believe in protectionism when countries use unfair trade practices or are COMMUNIST. Perhaps you forgot that part.

Free trade libertarian style between our 50 states where we have rule of law   As far as other nations protectionism and we look out for ourselves USA

See the chart about 2/3rds the way down the page - it’s about $132 billion for ad valorem taxes (tariffs).

Zero or virtually zero Japanese automobiles being imported in 1979.... go look it up
From toyotageek.com/toyota_tales/1977_celica_yellow_rose.html
Even though both the Sports 800 and the 2000GT came before the Celica, the Celica can be credited as Toyota’s breakthrough success in the sports coupe market.

Motor Trend awarded the Celica with the prestigious “Import Car of the Year” award upon its introduction in 1976. The Celica accounted for approximately 20% of Toyotas rapidly growing sales numbers during 1976 and 1977. During those years it was also the best selling Imported Sports Coupe in America. That is a huge market stake for a coupe. Those kind of sales percentages are unheard of in today’s sports coupe marketplace.

The ignoramuses of today don’t even know that tariffs were the main source of funding for decades and decades for the Federal Gov’t. Along with tobacco and alcohol taxes. The ATF (BATF) was set up to enforce the collection of those two taxes.

And as your post states, the US Customs Service was originally set up to collect tariffs not to hassle people getting off of international flights

You sir are correct. In a year like 1979 200,000 Jap import cars came in and total Automobile sales were ~8-10 million. So Japanese cars were about 2-4% of the market

Google Books

According to the above source, in 1980, Japanese imports in 1980 were 21% of US sales. Total imports were 37% of US sales.

Oh Horse poop..... Tariffs are the reason we have trouble exporting things to Asia (along with their sense of pride that they will only by Japanese, for example, products)

the entire concept of free trade is only for the naive. Every country wants whats best for it and its economy. So here we are giving our stuff away. Its working so well that we don’t have a steel industry. The economy of China will surpass ours within a few years. The wealth is being created elsewhere and is not coming here.

Thank you WORTH REPOSTING!

Which is why tariffs are helpful to the American economy. ;)Works both ways. If we want them to drop tariffs, raising tariffs isn’t going to accomplish this.
