Broccoli is good for you but there's a trick to make it work even harder.
Adding mustard, horseradish or wasabi to your broccoli has been found to significantly boost its cancer-fighting ability in a new study published this week.
The secret sidekick is an enzyme called myrosinase which is necessary to form sulforaphane, the vegetable's cancer-preventive component.
When a food item containing the enzyme was eaten with broccoli, scientists at the University of Ilinois found that the combination revved up the production of sulforaphane in both foods.
The study was published online in the British Journal of Nutrition Tuesday.
To squeeze out maximum benefits, pair the broccoli with as much heat as you can, researchers said.
"The spicier, the better. That means it's being effective," said study co-author Elizabeth Jeffrey.

Absolutely!
The Trinity of Heat- Hot Mustard, Horseradish and Habaneros (or other high-capsicum peppers).
Thins the blood, sweeps away cholesterol and clears the head..
I like broccoli, mustard, horseradish, but haven’t tried Wasabi. Broccoli gives me gout. I have to eat mustard in small amounts, and horseradish, which I love, gives me horrible indigestion. I guess I’ll have to find other ways to fight cancer.
So what you are saying is my combination of Extra hot wings with some brocolli on the side is really good for me during the Steelers game tomorrow.
Reminds of the Christmas I bought several bags of “wasabi nuts” at Walgreen’s clearance shelf.Just asumed wasabi ws some japanese variety of nutmeat.
The tastebuds got a shock! But they were actually pretty good snacks.
