"German soldiers confront a Jewish woman in a Bessarabian transit camp.
Many Jews were killed as a result of Romanian leader Ion Antonescu's decree Curatirea Terenului (Cleansing of the Ground).
Those who survived were relegated to primitive camps with grass huts, like the one pictured here, or to crowded ghettos."

Some of the names of note in today's promotion list:
- Julius A Furer - Coordinator of Research and Development (for historians, he was the author of Administration of the Navy Department in World War II, a source that I myself have used.
- Francis Warren Rockwell - Will be put in charge of the 16th Naval District (Philippines) just a month before it is attacked by the Japanese.
- James Laurence Kauffman - Anti-submarine warfare expert, will be instrumental in the ASW effort in 1942 as America is an official belligerent.
- John Franklin Shafroth - Will represent the U.S. battleship fleet at the Japanese surrender on the Missouri.
- John Reginald Beardall - Superintendent of the Naval College at Annapolis.
- William R. Purnell - Hart's Chief of Staff with the Asiatic Fleet at the beginning of the war.
- Thomas Cassin Kinkaid - Probably the most recognizable of the men on this list, he was involved in several of the actions in the Pacific including as commander of Task Force 61 during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands off Guadalcanal.
- Thoedore Stark Wilkinson - Already a holder of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions in the landing and occupation of Veracruz in 1914, he will head the Office of Naval Intelligence beginning this October. Needless to say he figures prominently in the Pearl Harbor Hearings.
