Ozzy was a 140-pound Rottweiler
A mother and daughter are livid after a Miami-Dade police officer shot and killed their pet dog despite warnings not to go on the property.
Police were responding to a burglar alarm at the home near Hialeah when the incident occurred, Det. Edna Del Castillo said.
Ozzy, a 140-pound Rottweiler, was in the backyard of the house.
"He wouldn't hurt anyone. He just looks big," said Laura Samuelson, who has owned Ozzy for three years. "All he would do is lick you to death. They were laughing about it."
Samuelson said her dog was shot three times.
Del Castillo said the dog charged the officers, who entered the backyard to investigate the house. Then the dog was shot, she said.
The shooting is being looked into but officers are instructed not to go into a backyard if they are warned about a dog, she said.
"If there is a dog, they are not going to enter," Del Castillo said.
But Samuelson's neighbor, Fernando Perez, said he told the cops several times that Ozzy was roaming in the back.
When the security alarm system at the home went off, Samuelson called Perez to check it out while she made the 20-minute drive to her house, he said. Perez said he knew not to go into the backyard because of the dog and when officers arrived, he warned them.
"'Be careful. Its a big dog,' I told them. They told me to go back to my house," said Perez, who repeated the warning several more times. "Before I get to my driveway, I hear the two shots. They walked into the backyard with the guns in their hand. Then they ran from the backyard like they were scared or something."
Samuelson said she got Ozzy to protect the house and deter thieves. Police have not said what triggered the alarm.
"He was our protector," Samuelson said. "Hes a huge part of our family."

Laura, at 140 lb, he is big.
If you own a dog, don’t invite the cops over to your neighborhood.
The dog shouldn’t have been interfering with a police investigation.
/MASSIVE SARCASM
The officer surely went back there because of those warnings. To him the warnings were the announcement of an opportunity to shoot a live stand-in for a human being according to his training. These incidents are far too common to not be part of training. You get a call anywhere for any reason, if there is a dog present, shoot the dog for practice. It will then be much easier to shoot an unoffending person when it becomes politically necessary.
Logic fail. If the police were scared to approach the house because of the dog. Wouldn’t a burglar also have been chased away by the dog? They did not need to shoot the dog. Cretins.
“These incidents are far too common to not be part of training.”
The cop-dog thing is getting to be quite cliche. It doesn’t make me see police in a good light.
Very unprofessional. Their careers should be in question over this.
It would be nice if they could go after these officers personally (legally). If guilty..let them pay by loosing their jobs and fines THEY personally pay, NOT the city, NOT the tax payers. Like in any profession, there are good and bad. The problem with terrible police officers is they are running around with guns playing god.
Heck here in Tampa the police will not respond to an alarm, period. Perhaps if I got a dog they could shoot it would help.

Man that’s gonna keep me up late tonight just trying to erase the image from my brain.
If it reaches the point in this coutry that cops are shooting unoffending persons for political reasons, then bullets will be going in both directions.
I think it’s a deliberate effort to create an uncooperative populous. By doing this, it then becomes a necessity to over ride the constitution to get anything done.
That’d wreck your whole weekend, not to mention “leave a mark.” LMAO!!
We must arm dogs.
Where I live, a few years ago a deputy sent to check the sheriff’s house while the sheriff was on vacation shot the sheriff’s dog while checking the house.
>>The cop(s) responsible should be castrated with a dull box knife, and their wounds cauterized with a propane soldering torch.<<
I can see you’ve given this a lot of thought. lol
I owned a 165# Fila Brailiero and a pitbull.
They got out one day an would not let the neighbor’s construction workers out of their vehicles.
The animal control guy was called and he told me that the Fila would not back off (Duh. Look up the temperament of a Fila) and he fired a round between the dogs front legs. He said the next one would have been to the head.
My dog backed off (the pit was running around trying to make friends).
I paid the fines for “animals at large” and thanked the AC guy for not shooting my dog.
He said, “Well, they’re dogs, not crimials. Sometimes they just need a little more motivation.”
I love rural WI.
