• Rakutin's forces cross the Desna river and reach the German defenses along the Ustrom and Striana rivers.

• Roosevelt issues a "shoot first" order to the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic if they come in contact with German U-Boats.

• Shaposhnikov, the Chief of the General Staff orders the Western Front to go over to the defensive.

Interesting that nobody at the Times blanched at using the word “hillbilly” in 1941.
