Some jobs are tough, some can be deadly. Some jobs are stressful, but exposure to dangerous situations and hostile environments can contribute significantly to the chance of a fatal on-the-job accident.
An average of 12 workers die on the job every day. According to preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 4,547 lives were lost on the job in 2010, about the same as the previous year, which had a final count of 4,551. The total is down from 5,214 in 2008.

wow
I was hoping “politician” was top of the list. But I didn’t even see it. Oh well.
Not much surprising there. Deaths on the job per capita would be interesting. Probably more people die in machinery accidents than any other , but that is a huge number of people in that description spread out over a number of occupations
I clicked through the slideshow, and cops and firemen aren’t even on the list.
But get ready for the cop and firemen unions to try to guilt-mail us into sweetening their already outrageous salaries during the upcoming 9/11 remembrances because “we put our lives on the line every day!”
Coal miners and farmers are way more at risk. And they don’t threaten public safety every time they decide they want a raise.
That's for sure.
I am familiar with the firefighter LODD. They are staying steady around 100 a year in a normal year. Modern lightweight building construction has made the profession more dangerous which seems like an oxymoron. Truss construction has led to less aggressive interior firefighting because of the risk of unpredictable collapse in buildings where it is used.
Plus there are far fewer structure fires do to improvements in building codes and the use of sprinklers.
And having just cleaned up some 80 foot oaks that fell or snapped off courtesy of Irene I was reminded once again how dangerous trees can be. Especially large branches under tension.
Most dangerous job? Sarah Palin opponent on FreeRepublic.
The accompanied picture was of a cockpit on a commercial jet with no control yoke! WTH?
Soldiers weren’t represented either !!!!!
President would be at the top of the list of hazardous jobs. In the last 200 years we've had 4 presidents assassinated. In terms of deaths per 100K man-years, that's a rate of 1000.
Correction, that’s a rate of 2000 per 100K man-years.

“Most dangerous job? Sarah Palin opponent on FreeRepublic.”
LOL! That’s really funny (and true).
I had the occupations listed originally, but apparently CNBC is an excerpt-only source.
