Darth Vader will lose a little more of his dignity in Star Wars original trilogy Blu-rays. Listen for yourself! George Lucas is not satisfied with turning the puppet Yoda in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace into a CG creation. Or just fixing some of the wonky lightsabre effects in the original trilogy. He's going a bit further.
Lucas had promised that fans would have a few new details here and there to notice in his newly remastered HD versions of his classic trilogy — and now the first details are leaking out. And fans are not happy. Some of the fans have gotten hold of the Blu-ray footage, and they're dissecting it at TheForce.net, the Blu-Ray.com forums and the DVDTalk forums. And a couple of changes to the soundtrack have already become apparent, at least if some recent leaks are to be believed.
UPDATE: Badass Digest says "a trusted source" confirms that these changes are real.
Most notably, "Vader now screams NOOOOOOOO when he throws the Emperor" in Return of the Jedi. And it sounds, quite frankly, kind of silly. Check out an mp3 of the new sound effect.

Second of all, when Obi-Wan scares off the Tusken Raiders from an unconscious Luke, we no longer hear Obi-Wan's famous "Krayyt Dragon" call, but instead it just sort of sounds like Walrus Man barfing. Check out an mp3 of the new version.

And then there's the new more realistic, blinking eyes on the Ewoks — see the clip at left featuring Wicket W. Warrick, which was sent to us by the same tipster who sent us the audio files of the new sound effects.
The fans are debating whether these leaks are real, with forum user JonYo writing:
Please, everyone remember that no matter how "reliable" certain sources are, the official release of the Blu Ray set is still a couple of weeks away, and until the final commercial release is in the hands of the public, anything leaked is suspect - including promotional material from Lucas. It's quite possible that we, the teeming masses of netnerds, are being messed with in regards to some of the "newly leaked" footage. The Ewok eyes, the crappy sabers, the various awkward screams...we're a highly excitable bunch right about now, and someone could very easily be having a laugh. Not saying this is the case, but it's quite possible.

In any case, with the new audio synced with the original video, it does seem to fit pretty well, and some fans even say they're okay with it once they see it in context.

You can dumb down the original trilogy all you want, George, it’s still not going to make the Phantom Menace a good movie, and will never make JarJar anything more than a Muppet gone bad.
Not that I really have much to say about it, as I don’t even own a bluray player.
Someone please restrain Lucas before he does any more damage.
Movies should be left as they were made in the beginning.
The willing suspension of disbelief is, after all, part of the game.
(Of course, that supposes that the audiences of today have the capacity for imagination.)

SW 1, 2, 3 were painful to watch.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone destory his legacy as much as Lucas has.
The first 3 films are legend.
Nothing he has done since is even in the same universe, figuratively speaking, as those first 3 films.

JarJar is reason enough to bar Lucas from being within 100 yards of a camera ever again.
I thought that maybe it was Spielberg who is holding him back from making any lame updates to it, but then I remembered that even Spielberg changed E.T. to show the federal agents carrying walkie talkies instead of shotguns.
I hope we get a Blu-Ray of Raiders before he starts making any changes.
JarJar is woefully misunderstood. The Force is strong with JarJar.
I agree. If a movie is good, leave it alone on the DVD and Blu-Ray releases. Put in an extra features section, show lost scenes there, have commentary tracks put down by significant actors in the movie, etc. Sometimes the commentary is just gold, like the one for Used Cars. Kurt Russell was having a ball telling stories behind the various shots, inside jokes, things I never noticed etc.
lucas’ insistence on continually screwing with a film that was absolutely brilliant just baffles me. The kiddie-humor 2nd trilogy and similar revisions to the 1st trilogy he did were bad enough, now he is going back again for more?
I first saw star wars in theaters in 77? when i was 6 years old, and while certainly some of the adult concepts escaped me to some degree or other, the movie itself thrilled me. It probably had a lot to do with a life-long interest in science-fiction. I didn’t need fart humor, clumsy humor, slapstick, etc, to get a great deal from the movie.
It probably says something about lucas’ personality that he cannot leave his masterpiece alone. It certainly says something else that his way of improving it is taking plot maturity down in age ever time he touches it.
I wish Lucas would do this to Omoslem’s speeches.
I pretty much agree, with one exception.
Blade Runner.
The directors cut was far far better than the initial release.
One writer, say a Hemmingway, or Azimov... that works.
Two or more? David Drake and Eric Flynt? Yeah, it's ok.... Some other couplings work better. Niven and Pournelle pop to mind.
But hand it off to a screenwriter and producer? Katy bar the door and hide the girls.
Imagine Ringworld as a movie. You do that. I gotta go barf.

With his endless butchery and rework, George Lucas has turned Star Wars into the Joan Rivers of movie sagas.

Same here. The original, theatrical versions are included with the limited edition 2006 DVDs. These are two disk packs with the crummy 2004 remake on the main disk and the theatrical release on the bonus disk.
Lucas, for whatever reason, wants to keep screwing with the films and apparently refuses to remaster the theatrical releases that endeared us to Star Wars in the first place. As far as I’m concerned, he’ll never get another dime from me no matter how many times he repackages and tweaks Star Wars. Until such time that the original theatrical versions are restored and released, I’m not buying.
