U-253 launched.

U.S.S.R.: German forces take Mga, cutting the last railroad link between Leningrad and the rest of the USSR.

SERBIA: General Milan Nedic is made head of a Nazi puppet government.

COMMONWEALTH OF THE PHILIPPINES: MacArthur advises Marshall that the Philippines would be defensible by April, 1942, but admits that the Philippine Army is currently not adequately trained, especially at battalion level and above. (Marc Small)

AUSTRALIA: Minesweeper HMAS Ballarat commissioned. (Dave Shirlaw)

CANADA: Minesweeper HMCS Quinte commissioned.

From the Harriman story on pg. 4.

The War Department announced that “a similar tour” would be taken simultaneously by three prominent Air Corps officers – Colonel E.M. Powers, the famous Major James H. Doolittle, and Lieut. Col. K.G. Boyd, who “will meet General Brett’s party at certain points of the war front.”

“The Famous Major James H. Doolittle”? You ain’t seen nothing yet. Check back about this time next year.
