I'm sorry, I didn't realize how early they were suggesting. No responsible dog breeder would release a dog in less than 7 or 8 weeks. Many prefer to wait until 9 weeks or longer.

Perhaps in Europe things are different.

One of my dogs is psychotic...adopted from a shelter.

I got my dog at about 5.5/6wks. Its been my experience that when getting them a little early, they bond heavier with their adoptive family. My current dog is very protective of my family yet she'll keep her distance from you. I have no doubt that if a stranger were on my property, she would take one glance at me and all I would have to say is "git 'em", and your screwed.

Call me old fashioned, but I like my dogs that way. Their MY dogs, not your play thing.

Pups learn a lot the from their mom in the first 2 months. Although not by choice I was left with a newborn Chi @CBC birth. Had to bottle feed it every two hours and take care of its diaper needs. Needless to say, she doesn’t know she’s a dog.

My puppy will be 12 weeks old when I pick him, due to my trip to Alaska.

No worries.

I don’t think Charles Schulz ever revealed how old Snoopy was when he was adopted from the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. Of course he was relatively sane compared to his littermates Spike and Olaf.

I got my pup at eight weeks and felt it might have been too young. He is a little fearful.

But two of his sibs were kept by the breeder and they act similarly.

We adopted a Catahoula mix puppy from a shelter about 4 years ago, I’m sure she was taken too young from her mother. She just didn’t seem to know how to be a “dog” those next few months. We then adopted a Chihuahua puppy who was about 4-5 months old, and that helped her out some. About 6 months later we adopted another shelter dog, one that was about a year old and seemed pretty calm, that helped her out more. Eventually, I think being around other dogs has helped her alot....

She didn’t seem to liked to be touched much at first, didn’t play much, was a nipper of pant legs, never licked my hand or anything. She seems pretty normal now, (we have another Chihuahua now too, long story), our little pack in not perfect, but our big dog, the Catahoula is much happier and better behaved than I thought she was going to be as a puppy....

Puppies start going through a fear period at around 8 weeks through around 10 weeks. It is best that they leave mom at either 7 weeks or 11 weeks, but preferably 11 weeks. If you’re looking for a puppy, find a breeder that will keep them to 11 weeks and uses BioSensor method on them on days 3 through 16.

One of mine most loyal, faithful, and sweet friebds...a Boston Terrier was 6 weeks old when he was given to me. He was a gentleman his entire life.

Scientist don’t know everything. They just want to make you think they do.

For some odd reason many people think you should wean puppies as soon as they will eat puppy food or 6 weeks. I think this is wrong- for health reasons. When we did raise puppies they had to be at least 8 weeks, and some I kept much longer...to me they just had to have a certain look, or I didn’t think they were ready. We raised Border Collies and had to keep a waiting list our puppies were so popular.

I have never noticed weaning early in any breed causing aggression though. I think you get aggressive dogs by breeding aggressive dogs to each other, as many do that on purpose because they really want aggressive dogs. They way they are raised plays a very large part, but so does breeding.

After watching the Dogs Decoded documentary, I'm more inclined to wonder if the scientists gave enough consideration to such factors as genetics when they did this experiment.

Not sure; but possible. Pups need all the time they can with their mom’s and litters. It socializes them and teaches them how to be a dog which is what they are.

What I have a problem with are the people that advocate spaying beginning at 8 weeks. Geez, puppies haven’t finished growing until 2 to 3 years of age. This will definitely stop the growth and do some damage .

I realize that this is about dogs and not human beings, who have far more complex mental and emotional systems. But does it make you question the wisdom of kindergarten? It does me.
