Columbia program pairs shelter dogs with veterans returning from service

Even fried chicken couldn’t coax Legs to get down on his belly and crawl through the yellow tunnel to meet his buddy beckoning from the other end.

But that was OK with John Picray. The Navy veteran, who served two deployments to Iraq and flew strikes over Afghanistan, understands fear.

Besides, Picray, 26, knows how far Legs, 3, has come. This was only the third hourlong training session the two had shared. When the part-Airedale mutt started, he wouldn’t even sit and stay.

Now that trick is a yawner. He heels, jumps a low obstacle and comes to Picray’s calls.

Legs learned it all from his amateur trainer, Picray, in the Veterans & Shelter Dogs program, part of a study at the Research Center for Human/Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

The program puts two potentially troubled souls together — abandoned dogs and veterans, like Picray, just home from war.

Let slip the dogs of war! Am I missing something, or could a returning veteran go to any county pound and adopt a mutt for a reasonable fee?

Thanks, I love stories like this. Man helps dog, dog helps man.

“About 124 dogs already have gone through the program.” Amazing some of the things they’ve been trained to do, like turn on lights!!

Some vets have such difficult PTSD, they need a trained dog, others can benefit for getting help training their dogs. Please read the article.

Great program, so why doesn’t the VA do this? I will tell you why, no money for this, staff hiring freezes,etc.. Yeesh! Nice work shinseki!!(sarc)

Was the VA responsible for those medical facilities with serious mold problems several years back?

Well, it depends on the whether the program is part of a shelter’s effort to find homes for dogs. Training them can be a big help in rehoming a stray.

Walter reed-—army.

The lack of resources are not really the VA’s fault—its congress not giving it enough money.

Hmm. For congress, it's not as much of a priority as social security? Not enough vet voters to compete with boomer voters?

Social Security disability on verge of insolvency
