Food for thought.
Someone added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at this striking conclusion:
There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin alone. Allow me to restate that number. Over the last several months, Wisconsin's hunters became the Eighth Largest Army in the World. More men under arms than in Iran . More than in France and Germany combined. These men deployed to the woods of a single American state to hunt with firearms, and no one was killed.
That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of Pennsylvania and Michigan 's 700,000 hunters, all of whom have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally establishes the fact that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.
The point? America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.
Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.
Oh Yes should be many more.
“I dont miss.”
Amen Bro. One shot, one kill, absolutely.
So why does your shotgun hold five shells then?
Answer: In case you see 5 deer.
There are tons of hunters down here in the South. I just have no idea how many per capita. Would be interesting to know.
OMG is that good news. Well worth posting.
My only rebuttal to that is that it takes a very special mindset to pull the trigger when there’s a human silhouette in your sights. Many if not most hunters lack that mindset, and indeed have throughout their careers as hunters trained and habitualized themselves specifically to search for and avoid humans lest they plug a fellow hunter while out in the bush. If (and when) push comes to shove, many who regularly carry and use firearms will not be of much use against the rioting horde simply because they will be unable to fire on a fellow human out of conscience or habit.
Now, certainly the number of people capable of firing on other humans will grow as peoples’ families and lives come under threat, but it still won’t be all of them, and counting on that number can cause more problems than assuming no one else will be at your side.
There is no need to fire on fellow humans. It's the non-fellow type that we should worry about. Also known as "enemy."
Not trying to be a downer here, but there have to be a number of hunters buying their licenses with money obtained from a government check or direct deposit. If we’re talking external enemy, I guess most would form up. Home bred tyranny? Who knows?
LOL
I’ve always said North Dakota could take France.
is that the number of hunters, or of licenses?
i usually get at least 4 licenses, same for most of the guys i hunt with.
“Im not a hunter as I live in the outskirts of Los Angeles...”
You shouldn’t let that stop you!
There are lots of good hunting opportunities in California. Get yourself a nice bolt action in a good chambering. I like the new Winchester Model 70s, and I’d recommend the 7mm-08 round as a nice, mild cartridge that’s fine for anything in North America other than perhaps the big bears. There’s nothing wrong with its “parent” case, the .308 Win either, a bit more kick, a slightly bigger hole, but a bit less flat trajectory. It’s a more widely used round, and a military chambering (same as 7.62 NATO), so if you’re worried about SHTF scenarios it might work better for you. Normally 7mm-08 ammo is very available though, it’s become quite popular.
Don’t skimp on your scope (figure at least a $200 budget, and a lot of the $400-500 scopes are quite a bit better), and don’t get too carried away with magnification. A 2.5-8x or 3-9x variable is plenty.
Practice a bit, take a hunter safety course, and you’ll be good go go! The lead-free bullets required in CA are a bit more expensive, but they work well.
Hunting is a great pastime, and the meat is a very nice bonus given today’s prices!
Thanks...sounds like fun. I am a bit too busy getting a new product to market and working, but someday...
Check out the Swing Glider online at ebay in about 30 days. It is a new, fun and very effective way to get a full body and aerobic workout.
That's beautiful!
Army and Marine basic training has shown that that reluctance can be removed in a hurry. It is done by dehumanizing. When you think in terms of the target and the enemy, coupled with adrenalin and fear, it is actually quite easy. It was for me and those I served with.
>it takes a very special mindset to pull the trigger when
>theres a human silhouette in your sights
Don’t count on that!
I was in the Army myself, so I went through the process, from vague silhouettes right up to (plastic) realistic targets. I certainly wouldn’t count on my enemy not being able to pull the trigger, just that the original article is a little too rah-rah and naive about that 600,000-strong “army”. Remember too that a lot of those “hunters” are either bird hunters, or guys like a former boss of mine, who go on catered “hunts” on stocked ranches. Those are the guys who aren’t going to easily make the switch from putting a deer in the reticle to putting a person there.
The power of the sword, say the minority of Pennsylvania, is in the hands of Congress. My friends and countrymen, it is not so, for the powers of the sword are in the hands of the yeomanry of America from sixteen to sixty. The militia of these free commonwealths, entitled and accustomed to their arms, when compared with any possible army, must be tremendous and irresistible. Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom? Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American [T]he unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it ever will remain, in the hands of the people.
