Posted on 08/13/2011 4:17:07 PM PDT by MNJohnnie

Good Bye Mitt Romney. If you cannot do any better then this in the Midwest your candidacy is DOA. You may win in NH but your are DOA in the South and the Midwest. Save your money Mitt, it's over.

Ask President Pat Robertson how important the straw poll is.

"MCCain, because of his military background, could win south of the Mason Dixon line. Romney cannot. If he cannot win in the Midwest he is DOA"

I wish that were the case. The problem is Perry, who can't win anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line, will compartmentalize the southern vote - making it nearly impossible for anyone else to stitch enough delegates together to win. Romney no longer needs to do well in the midwest to secure the nomination. All he has to do is hold court on his home turf in the northeast, and take California along with a few western states where Mormons have a good deal of influence.

The monied GOP establishment pushed Perry into the race to make sure no conservative would have a path to the nomination. Even if he were to somehow slip his halter and beat their thoroughbred, they see him as someone who will do as he's told and not threaten their place at the DC slop-trough.

I’m so glad that there is someone on this forum who can predict the future. Would you please take pity on those of us without your unique gift and provide the next month’s run of winning numbers for Powerball and Mega Million. Thanks.

I agree on most what you posted, except McCotter. He is brilliant.

McCotter needs to stay in because he understands our economic situation like no other.

That the Iowa straw poll is accorded political significance is ridiculous.

Not a single delegate is at stake, and the straw poll is even more laughably unrepresentative than an internet poll.

The number of participants is absurdly small; the event can be won with fewer than 5,000 supporters.

And everyone acknowledges that the straw poll is mostly an exercise in bus logistics and party-planning.

More intelligence demonstrated in his small finger than you demonstrate in your head here:

To be honest who cares what a poll of straws said ? ;)

I don’t like Romney for many reasons.. and what support he had over the others by having been a Gov, just got 1 upped by Gov Good Hair (Perry). I don’t see Rino Romney doing much as the season progresses.

RINO Romney KNEW he tanked and was a loser.

He stayed away until his Legion could come vote
across state lines.

4 years ago Mitt won and Huck came in 2nd. It’s meaningless.

There’s no BS about it, that’s real history. The real history of this event is that 3 out of the 5 winners did not win the nomination. You can type BS until your keys fall off and it’s not going to change the facts on the ground. And the facts on the ground is that the Iowa straw poll is that it’s just a beauty contest that has no meaning, there’s always some candidates that don’t even bother to participate, like this year Mitt chose to ignore it. If your position is undermined by the truth you need to reconsider it.

You’re wrong. This is a clear victory for conservatism and the Tea party. Bachmann’s victory is a clear message to the GOP that the electorate is not in the mood for their RINO BS; furthermore, it shows that Iowa, which is a fairly decent bellwether state, was not swayed by the media’s biased portrayal of the Tea party during and after the debt debates. Given Iowa’s similarity to other midwestern battleground states, this bodes well for conservatism and the Tea party which means liberal heads are preparing to explode. It also means that Bachmann has drawn first blood and Tim Pawlenty got beat up by a girl and a crazy old man. There’s all kinds of meaning in this. If you don’t see any of it, it’s because you don’t want to so, again, I would encourage you to waste your hopeless negativity on someone else as I’m not buying it.

No I’m not. History shows this even means nothing. It’s a prefab event where candidates bring in their own voters. The only thing it shows is which candidate is willing to put the most effort into it. Heck it doesn’t even show the person is going to win the caucus, Mitt won the poll 4 years ago but Huck won the caucus.

I’m not being negative, the reality would be the same if Mitt had repeated his victory of 4 years ago. It is a meaningless event no matter who wins. All I’m doing is pointing out history. Here’s the real history:
in 79/80 Bush won the poll and the caucus but Reagan won the nod
87/88 Robertson won the poll, Dole the caucus, Bush the nod
95/ 96 Dole and Graham tied in the poll, Dole won everything that counted (this marks the first time the poll winner got the nod, and it was a tie)
99/00 Bush for the sweep (only clean winner of the pole to get the nod)
07/08 Mitt wins the poll (with better numbers than Bachmann just got), Huck gets the caucus, and McCain the nod

See it’s meaningless. It’s a GOP fundraiser, and part of the fund-raising includes the candidates bidding for booth space (bidders did not include Mitt this year, remember he stayed home). It’s not even the only straw poll Iowa has, it’s just the “big” one (14 thousand this year) that takes place during the painfully slow news-month of August. It’s entertaining that Michele won, but it’s meaningless. It’s a BBQ with delusions of grandeur.

Not “meaningless”.

RomneyCARE previous winner -— LOST.

People know who Romney is despite the MSM pushing
him down everyone’s throat.

Romney didn’t participate. He didn’t show, no booth, announced in June that he wasn’t going to participate. I don’t think anybody who didn’t participate has ever won this thing. The “voters” in this don’t even have to be eligible to vote in Iowa, any resident over 16 1/2 or student at one of the universities can “vote” in the straw poll. The results mean nothing. 4 years ago he won the poll and didn’t even win the caucus. The Iowa straw poll is meaningless, always was, always will be. It’s winning a Kewpie doll at the county fair, which is fun, but nobody ever got to the White House because of how many Kewpies they had.
