One of the main components that youll want to have around the house (or apartment) during a SHTF situation is chlorine bleach. Not only can it be used for cleaning water (although boiling is hands down more effective and healthier) it is excellent for keeping things sanitary.
Unfortunately, the average shelf life of liquid bleach (being stored between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit) is around 6 months. After that, bleach will lose 20% of its strength at around the year mark and then 20% each year after that. So if youre not vigilant about keeping it rotated, chances are when you need it for disinfecting water or to keep things clean youll be fresh out of bleach and luck.

Dual Survivor is a great show. Dave Canteberry has a youtube channel with hundreds of survival videos that’s definitely worth checking out. Between him and Cody, they could survive indefinitely in any situation. They are both a wealth of knowledge. But if I had to chose which one to partner up with it would be Dave hands down. I’d rather eat meat than maggots and foliage. Cody’s steam purification system he builds on the stranded at sea/tropical island episode is really cool and he is certainly a master of fire.
It is my experience that people with this type of attitude will be the first to turn on you, because they have an over whelming need to be right and when someone proves them wrong they tend to they need to punish those who were right.
Dual Survivor is a kick in the butt! I’m a little bit of both of those guys so it’s like listening to me argue with myself about the best way to go. lol
Dave has a simple down home country boy swagger. One of my favorite shows.
The show shows their failures as well as successes. I like that
Please PLEASE tell me you don’t walk around in the snow in the winter in your socks and shorts. LOL
Thanks for information, I keep about 8 gallons of bleach on stock, but didn’t know the shelf life was so short.

Thanks for the tip on the videos. I still don’t think of internet research first after years on this dang computer. I guess I’ll be old school all my days. I’d go with Cody. I can get meat and fish if I want it. I think he’s a little more cautious about about taking risks. One accident in the back country carries high odds of being your last mistake.
I darned sure don't go into the woods barefoot. I wish my feet were that tough though.
Hence my Jefferson comment. Someone...a long time ago...co-opted a group of words and said they were bad.
BTW, ansel12, filthy communication, mentioned in Col 3, isn't cursing as you probably think it is. It's ANY unedifying speech...such as saying something like this: "It is infantile, anti-conservative, and definitely not Christian as you want to convince us."
According to Col 3...that's cursing since its obscene language...or abusive language (which is what "aischrologia" means..."shameful speaking").
So...Ansel12...please stop cursing on the forum. ;-)
I got the point of the article. My point is that Chlorine is not needed and alternate means of ensuring water safety can be had using more reliable methods. Keeping Chlorine or materials to make Chlorine is not necessary and an additional risky step. Imagine needing to bugout or move for any reason and carting around those chemicals. Any mixture of water onto them can be hazardous and ruin anything near them not to mention be a hazard to people and animals. Those chemicals are great for pools, but I just don’t want another risk to cover.
;-)
I want to thank you for posting this. I have been stocking up on vinegar for its cleaning/disinfecting properties, which are impressive, but nothing beats chlorine bleach for absolute destruction of pathogens. Just last week I was thinking it would be nice to be able to make chlorine bleach but didn’t think it possible. I’ve never had a use for the raw chlorine chemicals so this didn’t occur to me.
I laugh but I think we all do that. I have gone out to the garage bare foot in a Michigan winter to look for something. You stand around for a while looking and then it hits you. CRAP MY FEET ARE COLD. duh!
Try cleaning up an area, clothes, bedding, etc without bleach during an serious flu (or worse) epidemic and you might just change your mind.
This is real life. You get one, use it well.
If prepping is a hobby for you fine. But one thing it isn’t is real, that is EXTREME prepping. This kind of stuff — making chlorine at home — isn’t a survival skill.
Nor is learning how to make oil lamps. Making oil lamps is nice as a way of understanding history. Making chlorine maybe helpful as a way to learn some chemistry.
But it’s not survival.
Real survival is a community affair.
Our founders understood that. “A well-regulated militia” didn’t mean an individual with a gun and ammo, it meant a men able to work as an organized unit. A community at arms.
Sewers, water, medical care — these are community actions. A community must be able to do them.
I prefer serious "waffle stomper" hiking boots for real outdoors explorations.
I don’t know how you end up going there, I’m talking about the cussing here, not among the left themselves.
You are defending the left and their agenda of cussing, that you cannot deny as you keep promoting it on this thread.
I personally wouldn’t be saying to a minister that we need to discuss preparation for emergencies, so let’s have a SHTF speech from you, here is a SHTF article, don’t clean up the language because times have changed, get used to it, roll over preach we are all mature enough to talk like foul mouthed junior high boys now.
Dear Abby
I am a big Birkenstock fan. I wear them all year long. They are my house slippers. As soon as I get home off come the shoes and socks and the sandels come on. Do you think I have a little DAVE in me?
