First Look: Henry Cavill as Superman in ‘Man of Steel’
Slashfilm ^ | August 4th, 2011 | Germain Lussier

With all the unofficial set photos that have been popping online from the sets of The Dark Knight Rises and Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, Warner Bros. has jumped the gun and provided our very first, official, look at Henry Cavill as Superman in the June 14, 2013 film. Check out the full, high-resolution version, after the jump.

Choosing this image, Superman protecting a smokey safe, as our first official look at the film says a lot about what Snyder is going for here. What does it say exactly? That’ll I’ll leave to you all to discuss.

Superman’s hair is definitely on the table for discussion as well. We saw yesterday in these photos that Cavill can certainly rock the trademark curl but this photo makes him look more like an ’80s Wall Street trader. Maybe the hair changes over the course of the film?

Finally, there’s the suit itself. A far cry from Christopher Reeves’ or even Brandon Routh’s duds, Cavill’s costume seems to have an almost living, Spider-Man quality about it. Blow up the image and look at the textures. Is it a departure? Yes. But the almost reptile consistency of it makes perfect sense when you realize these are clothes from another planet.

DC has always been the ' more adult' of the genre

And how.

Superman simply can't compare to "Miracleman"...

Miracleman quote: "Yes, I'm here....you can go now... *Squish*"

Hanry Cavill is hot, but this already looks stupid. I’ll wait for the DVD.

Looks more like a handsome gangster than Kal-El.

The hair is ALL wrong. The costume is - meh. Doesn't look alien so much as reminiscent of Spiderman - on whom it looked good - on Superman - not so much.

Your list of DC based movies seems to sample heavily from non-DC universe based graphic novels.

V for Vendetta was published first under “Quality comics” and only REPRINTED in the USA under the D.C. off brand “Vertigo”.

So when it comes to reprinting good graphic novels - and then making a decent movie out of it - D.C. may well be tops.

When it comes to making good superhero movies (or comics)from the Universe that has Superman, Batman, WonderWoman, Flash, Aquaman - OR - the Universe that has Spiderman, Captain America, the X-men, and Thor - there isn't even a contest.

I always loved Krypto, the dog. I’ve never seen these other super pets.

I think both of them were master pieces...not doubt in my mind. I have the DVD of both.
I'm now watching the Lord of the Rings. I my opinion, the best 9 hours of a movie ever. DVDs of all 3 movies.

Political correctness has already stained this movie...Laurence Fishburne cast as Perry White...

WTF?

I like that the costume is dark but what’s up with the grooved? texture?

You know that cancelled Superman movie from the 90’s (Superman Lives) would have had him in an all black suit because the producer Jon Peters thought the traditional suit was “too faggy”. Peters also wanted Nick Cage or Will Smith to play Superman.

There is a photo-shopped pic of Nicolas Cage wearing the traditional Superman costume on the net...horrible; simply horrible.

Yeah, I can’t really picture a neurotic, chain-smoking Superman working out too well.
