BARTLESVILLE, OK - To Protect and Serve... sadly, one of their own failed to be provided with sufficient protection from the elements to survive.
Last Wednesday, a Bartlesville Police Department K9 died.
The dog, a 2 yr-old Belgian Malinois named Copper, had been with the department for just 5 months before his tragic death.
Copper lived with his handler, a Bartlesville Police officer - the man left Copper in his outdoor kennel for "a couple of hours" on Wednesday.
When the handler returned home, the dog was dead on the slab of his kennel...slab?
As in cement? In the heat of the day?

Was the cop out of bullets?
Seems that if the cops are not shooting your dog they’re killing their own. What sort of imbecile would leave a dog out in heat like that?
Waiting to hear the animal abuse charges..........waiting..........waiting...................
Last week? an officer left his dog in the hot SUV.Dog died.I think it was in the Cincinnati news.
It’s truly a shame. The Belgian Malinois is such a beautiful dog.
The rescue I volunteer for are reluctant to allow cops to adopt dogs. After reading several stories like this and the shooting of dogs by cops, now I know why.

Ya gotta remember, he is a "trained observer" and has to make split-second decisions! If that wasn't stated in his training, he's off the hook.
SOP in my old department was ....you lose, destroy or allow any issued department property outside of a line of duty incident ..... You bought it ! Comes out of your pay.
Shy of normal wear an tear property has to be cared for...
Take it out of this dummies pay...all 15 to 20k$ !
Stupid move. That pup has to be cared for same as an infant child pretty much.
Set the example as this wasn’t an accident with heat like this regions been suffering .....
This was neglect IMO.
I don’t understand cops. What is it with their mental process?
The question: will an internal investigation find the cop responsible for negligent homicide of a police officer?
Oh, never mind:
Copper will be honored in a memorial service - and his handler may face disciplinary action if the internal investigation reveals that there was not enough shade in the kennel when Copper died.
“If?” If? Already they’re covering for him.
I don’t understand cops. What is it with their mental process? I dated a cop once (one date) - what a total jerk.
A small town near here paid $10,000 for a “drug dog” (as if they really needed one). Naturally, some idiot left it in a cop car on a hot day and it died. I read these stories all the time. And cops wonder why people don’t “respect” them.

Second,no investigation is needed as it is obvious by the dog's death that insufficient care was provided.
I'd charge the human officer with causing the death of a dependent by negligence.
Appropriate sentence would be dismissal from the police force and prohibition of animal ownership/handling in the future.
“First ,the elevation of dogs and horses to police officer status is just darn stupid in so many ways.”
Okay, fine, but if that is the law, then a cop civilian and non-cop civilian should be treated the same way other the law.
If a non-cop civilian was dog-sitting this dog and it happened, that civilian would be under arrest right now.

Hard to believe that a person of sound mind and reasonable intellegence would volunteer for such a job.
People who can’t be responsible for an animal have no business being responsible keeping the peace in a community.
I’ve only had limited experience with cops with dogs (drug dogs). 2 who used to bring their dogs to my class to talk to my students and show the kids. Both were very nice, and had a great rapport with their dogs and the dogs were quite impressive. If memory serves the dogs were house dogs.
I don’t know what happened in this case (this article seems very one sided, the writer already has decided that the handler left the dog with no shade etc—and may be right, but the tone clearly makes me think it wouldn’t matter, this is an agenda driven person). There may be a slim possibility that the dog had some health issue (I say slim because I am sure these dogs are thoroughly checked out altho I have heard on occasion of them being purchased and then having health problems, so it does happen).
I am quite surprised the dog was left outside. These dogs are expensive and valuable. However, I do wonder what the kennel standards are (surely there are kennel standards for police k9s?). The writer seems horrified about a *slab*. It may well be that the requirements are concrete. It’s easy to keep clean. These days the humaniacs have demanded and gotten laws governing standards for keeping most dogs, including hobby breeders in some places. It wouldn’t surprise me if police k9s also fall under some such law (but this is a guess). At any rate, I am NOT defending this case, I am simply adding a few questions and comments. I would like a little more information, perhaps a photo of where the dog was kept, and I would like to know if these dogs are never kept in the house.
