All of my usual stores are rearranging and changing what they put on their shelves. I'm sensing that the big uptick in prices will start to arrive shortly, maybe before Christmas. I'm interested to hear what the impressions of FRugal Freepers. What are you seeing? What will you be buying in quanity before TSHTF?

Packed in #10 cans (mostly) that have a shelf life up to 10 years. I have purchased the milk substitute (ok for cereal but wouldn’t drink it plain), whole eggs (good - made scrambled eggs with them), wheat gluten (good), dried butter (good but doesn’t reconstitute for spreading on bread, used in cooking it works fine), dried celery (good for soup, might be too butter to add to cold salads), dried onions (great taste - larger dime sized peices, good flavor), and dried peas (very good).

I make a fried rice dish when I have leftover cooked rice and egg *noodles* are part of it, especially if I am low on other protein to add in.
Whip up 1-2 eggs.No need to add water or cream, as you want it to be as thick and flat as possible. Oil a griddle and spread the egg onto the pad. Keep tilting the griddle to spread the egg out into a smooth, flat pancake. When almost set, flip the egg, turn off the heat. Set it aside to cool while you make the rest of the dish (note: google the recipe for Nasi Goren). When the rice and veggies are done, slice the cooled egg pancake into strips. Wider is better, IMO. Stir into the hot rice. Would work well with soup, too.

Is there some reason your toilets aren’t going to work, provided you fill the tanks by hand?

My husband and I have been discussing this sort of scenario and we are fairly certain the exits off the Interstates will be closed by the local LEO and traffic will be kept moving out of the urban areas.
Camps at the end of the route?
In any event, we have spoken about this with friends and everyone is of the same mind: take the chain saw, locate trees and block access where it will do the most to increase local security.
If you didn’t know the source, I doubt most folks can tell rabbit from white meat chicken. Rabbit is quite dry, so it is best fried or slow cooked with liquid. You also cannot eat only rabbit, as the lack of fat means lack of essential nutrients.
The worst part of rabbit is killing them. They can scream.
I hadn’t thought about that. What a concern would be though is if there would be enough water to do that. I’m thinking no. I live in town and am at the mercy of city services although I’m fairly self-contained if something ‘major’ happens.

Modern septic systems use pumps. They pump the excess liquid out into the drain field and the solids are what settle and have to be pumped out of the first tank every so often. We have a large system and our first tank is nearly 1300 gallons. Eventually, it will be full.
City systems should be similar. At some point, no electricity is going to mean back ups.
We always use the porta potty during floods and electric outages. Having had a major backup, it is better safe than sorry. It is a hell of a clean up job and then, you need somewhere to dispose of the contaminated clean up water.
We had an outhouse, once. We could do it again.
We are almost finished our brick oven, but it has been useable. Yesterday, we had a big pizza party. Pizzas are ready in about two minutes! A wood fired brick oven is fantastic for cooking.
A good book that helped guide us is: The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens It is by Alan Scott. He helped popularize brick ovens.
That’s a terrific idea. Had not even considered that (not on the best of terms with neighbors...well it’s more like everyone minds their own business).
Security will be a major concern; especially when time goes on because of growing/raising food; supplies etc.
Like you I get the feeling LEO will “try” to block even the most rural routes. Even if not, it doesn’t hurt to consider all possibilities in the worse case scenarios.
I was astounded when granny told us how they used to make biscuts with the dutch oven in a CAMP FIRE!

It is amazing what a person can do if they have enough time and I guess money.
My Great Grandfather lived in rural NW Florida at a time when electricity was not even common in towns.
He had hot and cold running water, flush toilets, a huge bath tub and even had his own phone system running to his relative homes. He also had a carbide light system which I have been told was just as bright as electric bulbs.
He built his home below a flowing spring. He had a reservoir around 20 feet above the house which was a two story. He ran the water to the house using conventional plumbing. He ran one through the cast iron cooking stove which already had a reservoir for hot water.
The telephone used batteries and a hand crank.
The house won an award from a magazine in the 1930’s as the most modern house in rural America. I think it was “The Progressive Farmer”.
About the only maintenance was he had to put bleach in the water reservoir on a regular basis.
