It is amazing what a person can do if they have enough time and I guess money.

My Great Grandfather lived in rural NW Florida at a time when electricity was not even common in towns.

He had hot and cold running water, flush toilets, a huge bath tub and even had his own phone system running to his relative homes. He also had a carbide light system which I have been told was just as bright as electric bulbs.

He built his home below a flowing spring. He had a reservoir around 20 feet above the house which was a two story. He ran the water to the house using conventional plumbing. He ran one through the cast iron cooking stove which already had a reservoir for hot water.

The telephone used batteries and a hand crank.

The house won an award from a magazine in the 1930’s as the most modern house in rural America. I think it was “The Progressive Farmer”.

About the only maintenance was he had to put bleach in the water reservoir on a regular basis.

We may not have the time right now but imo we have to keep the ‘how to’ in mind. It would be terrific if your ggf’s notes/plans were around for the next generation. I think we’re going to have to stumble for a bit (well some of us) but I have no doubt that we will make it. It’s the riff raff coming out to pillage the rural area; that’s where I’m afraid things are going to get nasty.
