All of my usual stores are rearranging and changing what they put on their shelves. I'm sensing that the big uptick in prices will start to arrive shortly, maybe before Christmas. I'm interested to hear what the impressions of FRugal Freepers. What are you seeing? What will you be buying in quanity before TSHTF?

This guy has a couple recipes but also shows how to can tomatoes. He also has a design for a more durable solar oven made from wood rather than cardboard.
Do a search for Barbara Kerr. She’s the guru of solar cooking and has tons of tips and recipes.

The other day we eliminated about half the bulbs in multi-bulb fixtures.
That sucks, I lost mine in a terrible hangliding accident over a volcano.
Sam’s Club today, July 24. I noticed that both Glucosomine Chondraitin and Fish Oil tablets took a huge price jump. The Glucosimine was the triple strength, but it cost $27 for 400 tablets. I’m used to spending around $15 for 300 tabs of double strength. Also toothpaste. One brand was $5 per tube and you had to buy 3 tubes.
Cakes and other baked goods went up $1 per package. Prepared entrees were about the same price, but the contents were reduced. I purchased black apricots because the ones I was offered at the tasting booths were so delicious. Mine were over-ripe and spoiled when I got them home. I’ll have to take them back. Very disappointing.
Also, the store was only about half full of goods. This is a trend that I have noticed all year. They are just not stocking all the wonderful, irresistable goods that they formerly stocked on a regular basis.

This summer I’ve seen more lake patrol (river authority) than I’ve seen my whole life here. They’ve assumed the role of police in recent years. With both of us seeing this increase, it may be more than just a hmmmm moment.

You will need to build an outhouse, of course a long way from the house. If there are no privacy concerns just dig a trench. It needs to be deep but not real wide.
I was a child in the Florida Panhandle during the late 40’s and there was no electricity. We of course had an outhouse. With the sandy soil in this area the waste was consumed very quickly. Probably not so in other areas.
Mother always kept a bucket of water and a pan on the back porch on a board where you could wash your hands.
I once had to park my travel trailer, a 32 foot one on my parents property. This was only for a couple of months but I wanted to stay in it rather than in the house. My Father who was knowledgeable about such things told me to just dig a 5 foot deep hole and dump the tank in it every few days. He said to go ahead and use the commercial chemicals.
To my surprise it worked amazingly well. A day after dumping the tank, there would be absolutely nothing left in the bottom of the hole, just sand. Of course this would probably not work in other type soil.
When I left to return to grad school, all I had to do was fill in the hole.

You can make vodka out of just about anything — not something you need to be hoarding.
I tried wheat this year. Well - I stuck my toe in. I made a very tiny raised garden, threw down some seed, and covered with organic garden soil. I wanted to watch how it grew.
Note:
Rabbits will eat it all up. So, probably all things like skunks - deer. If you have no fenced area, you will need to plant “extra”.
Easy to grow. LONG growing season. Can do either “spring” or “winter” crop (or both). You don’t need a huge field to produce a fair amount of wheat. Buy HEIRLOOM.

I've been noticing that, too. I've also notice that people are starting to feel each other out on their politics. Maybe it's the open comments I've been noticing, but it seems like conservatives are starting to open up a bit and trying to find out where other people stand on the issues, without being inflammatory at this point.
This is a good thing. We're quietly choosing sides here in America. I hope we can turn this ship around before the sides start shooting at each other. (But I think we have most of the bullet, lol.)
Prices have gone up in the last week on dairy, citrus and crackers.

Tragic. These stories abound. Absolutely tragic.
Seasoned cast iron does NOT release iron into your diet. Once it’s seasoned it’s totally covered in carbon and no iron is in contact with the food. If you let the pan get rusty it will release iron but it will also be one crappy pan to cook with.
Thanks - checked it out, one doz. cans with shipping, cost was $90.48. Total $7.54 per can (shipped). Very hard to get below that total on canned butter. But I LOVE butter.
I have to take the time and check out the Asian markets.
Something I just thought of that some of the younger group here might not have is an old cookbook. Knowing how to cook from scratch is becoming a lost art. Having an older cookbook (one of the old White Houses or the 1950s Betty Crocker, or the Williamsburg if you already have a good grasp of cooking from scratch) will help them learn to cook with basic foodstuffs.
Also, have a list of substitutions. Such as if you don’t have veg oil you can use apple sauce (or a mashed apple) in a cake. Use water instead of broth. When to use baking powder vs. baking soda. Make cream cheese from yogurt or how to make yogurt. Make a “noodle” from cream and egg. Or that finely ground nuts can sub for flour (yes, normally more expensive unless you have a nut source or you’re out of flour), etc.
