One must be a musician to get into the 27 Club.

It’s sad, but if she didn’t know Christ she ain’t resting right now. What a waste of great talent and the gift of life God gave that woman, but she made her own choices. It’s sad.

Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison. All dead at about 27 or so. Show biz can be a very hard life.
****************************
I know a jazz musician who quit it cold some decades ago. His group was coming back from a New Orleans gig, all of them drunk, high or both, riding in two cars. Somehow, they managed to wreck with their cars on an otherwise empty road in the dead hours of the morning. My friend said that everyone of them except him were laughing and carrying on about the wreck which totalled both cars. Sitting in the middle of empty country, surrounded by laughing lunatics, somehow got through to him. Decades later he still plays his trumpet from time to time. His friends from this incident are all dead.
Creative genius plus discipline can go a long way. Creative genius plus self indulgence . . . not so much.

I think with a lot of musicians, especially those who are young when their "star is rising," don't give in to temptation so much as they are coerced into giving in to temptation. If they don't have a very committed personal support circle to help them deal with pressures, it becomes easy for just one trusted "friend" to say "I know just what will help you calm down" and get away with it. Not everyone is adept at dealing with pressure.

I'm sure every major newspaper on the planet had this story and her obituary completely written up already . . . just waiting to insert the date and her age of death.
What a train-wreck of a life.

I heard today that Kurt Cobane, Jimi Hendrix, Janet Joplin and now Amy Winehouse were each 27 when they died.
