Good morning gardeners. I canned all the tomatoes I had picked the previous week this past Wednesday. Sadly it did not take very long to do the canning. I also roasted (chared and peeled) about half of the Jalapenos I had picked and froze the other half. I also cut up and froze some green Bell Peppers and zucchini squash.
On Wednesday I had a pop up T-storm visit the garden and then yesterday it was cloudy all morning and around 11 am a very nice, lazy, soaking rain started falling and it lasted for about two and a half hours. It dropped the temps down into the high 70s for a few hours and then the sun came out and the temps went to the low 90s, not a bad day at all!

I was hoping someone could advise on a good pressure canner. I’ll probably buy one in the next week or so.
when we were kids, my brothers and I snuck up behind a baby skunk and plopped a 5 gallon bucket down on top of it. then, not knowing what to do with it, we ran at full speed and knocked the bucket over to let the thing go. You could slide a piece of plywood underneath your captured skunk, though, and then release it in your nearest treehugger’s yard...
Try the Texas A & M ag website. I had it bookmarked but dropped it for a west coast link. My soil is acidic so I put Sulphur on the soil and work it in around my Blueberries to lower the PH and I also fertilize them with Mer-Acid 3 or 4 times a year. I imagine your Texas soil is Alkaline?

I have BEANS!!!! Ok, so only a few every day, but my green beans plants are covered in little baby beans, and I’ve been picking for the last 3 days. My raspberries are producing, too. Again, just a few every day, but they’re a nice treat. I have blossoms on my tomatoes, watermelons, and zucchinnis, and my cucumber plants are big enough they’re starting realize that they’re vines :)
I took pictures of my “chia hill” erosion-control experiment, but I can’t seem to find them. I’ll post them when I do.
Google “zucchinni pickles” for other ways to use them.

I asked you this question before and will try again... How do you kill a skunk in a trap nicely so it doesn’t spray and drowning is not the answer???
We love freezer pickles except I don’t freeze them.
I make a batch and keep them in the fridge and we snack on them until they are gone and I make some more.
about 6 cups thinly sliced cukes, I leave the skin on
1 large onion thinly sliced
1 teaspoon salt
toss cukes and onions with salt. Let stand for 1/2 hour. Drain liquid.
Bring to a boil:
2 cups sugar
1 cup white vinegar
take off heat and add 1/2 teaspoon celery seed.
cool and then pour over cukes and onions. Refrigerate. They are delicious in about 2 hours. They will keep in the fridge for weeks.
Every single one of my plants have “recovered” from the hail storm we had near the end of June. Tonight I noticed that the one green tomato “stalk, and nothing else” has put out a small branch with tiny leaves. How cool is that?
The garlic, lettuce, chives and orange cosmos are growing in last years new beds. I added compost and fresh soil last fall.
Everything else is growing in the new beds filled with the square-foot gardening mix. It seems to dry out very quickly, but I'm worried I might be watering the soil too much VS not watering enough. How do I tell?
It might have something to do with the 97 degree sun filled days we've been having for the last week. When the winds and rains haven't been blowing trees apart. ;-)
It’s a little late since you’ve already gotten new traps, but, if you superglue a nut to the trigger, the mice can’t steal the bait.
I have used Blossom Set when the temps were high and wind was high. Flowers on tomatoes were falling off, but held after being sprayed.
If you used the equal parts of compost, peat moss, and vermiculite well mixed and 6 inches deep it should be impossible to over water, SFG book.
If you are watering too shallow, then the roots may be too shallow which could be a problem in the heat. The vermiculite is supposed to help conserve water.
The only thing that I am watering more than once a week is the plants in pots, cucumbers and melons. I think if your plants look ok (not wilted) in the morning you are probably doing ok.

As to the skunk question:
Approach slowly & steadly, so as not to alarm it, while holding a plastic tarp in front of you. When close enough, carefully wrap the trap with the tarp. Take the trap to the desired safe location; it is *almost* guaranteed that it will NOT spray while the trap is draped, since it feels safe in the dark hidy-hole, and would only be spraying itself.
Carefully expose & latch open the trap’s door, and stand (way) back, and patiently wait. When it starts to gets dark, it will leave the trap. Maybe before opening the tarp & trap, place a small (disposable) dish or can of stinky cat food to keep it headed in the right direction.
Let it waddle far enough away, preferably to the food dish, (at least 20 feet from you, the trap, and the tarp) aim and shoot.
They’re supposed to be yellow peppers, and the largest one is showing some yellow. I also spray the other peppers and the tomatoes. Insects haven’t been a problem with the tomatoes, but birds have pecked a few. I guess they needed a snack after eating all the blueberries!
I’m glad all your plants are coming back. We had some small hail earlier in summer, but now it’s just dry and hot.

We have all types, but I guess you’d have to say overall it tends towards alkaline.
