You said “I always seem to be out of cell phone range out here when something goes wrong”. To me if something is wrong, it’s an emergency, out of gas, flat tire, hit a deer, etc. The Emergency button makes a Satellite call to an OnStar advisor.
Sorry, I don't think you're knowledgeable on the topic. All available documentation indicates that outgoing signals from the vehicle use the terrestrial cellular network.
No I’m sorry. I guess I haven’t owned an On Star equipped truck since 2006 and called OnStar just a few minutes ago to verify what I said to you regarding Emergency calls being via Satellite.
I would not have it in the regular vehicle cuz I dont want big brother to know anymore about me than they already do..
If youse name ends in like a vowel, youse might tink it is like a good idea. Justsayin'! Or else eh, fuggedaboutit.
Dah crooked nose guys have a sayin': "Youse wanna make dis easy or do I gotta like chase youse round dah room?"
I am an an amateur radio operator who has a radio that can also receive the law enforcement frequencies locally. I listened one day on the “tactical frequency” to a drug bust in which the local gendarmes were monitoring the discussion taking place in a vehicle that they were following in a drug operation by listening to the”onstar” in the car... We really need this intrusion into the privacy of the occupants of our motor vehicles.. ONSTAR ? no thanks..
Five years from now the in-vehicle unit may have a satellite TRANSCEIVER. Now all it has is a satellite RECEIVER.
Wrong again Ace. There is a TRANSCEIVER, as per OnStar Advisor Ginger employee # XXX6100.
no I'm just not a wimp
My question: Is On-Star a division of Government Motors?
Understand that Onstar is purposed primarily as a tracking and surveillance tool. As a firefighter we were cautioned on our conversations during rescue/extrications as interior audio is remotely and automatically recorded and uploaded. Can you imagine this tool in the hands of the government owned GM?
in California thru the freedom of information in a case it was exposed that on* recored folk as they drove and talked..
it literally is Big Brother on hard drive
I had it as a year free trial on a 2008 GMC Acadia. The e-mailed reports were handy, oil life remaining, all manner of data on the vehicle, even tire pressure in each tire. Turn by turn with a live voice was better than the annoying digital ones on a GPS, but honestly I rarely have need of it, used it more out of curiosity. I let it lapse when the year was up.
Now, the free XM radio for a year, I re-upped on that with a discount code I found online. Enjoyed the satellite radio.
I did take advantage of the hands-free cell service, had a number specific to the car. Audible ring over slightly muted music on the radio, just touch a button on the steering wheel and start talking, radio muted automatically. That was nice. It was a decent deal at the time, same number on my cell phone so it was pretty seamless. Better reception than relying on cell towers, so superior to Bluetooth.
Do you have a link to this story?
sorry no but only because I do not possess one single pc skill save typing
one of my old tag lines was...” if pc skills named us, I’d be backspace delete”
you can google it ax’ing for on star court cases
I installed an aftermarket radio in my 2002 Silverado and never bought the adapter kit so the Onstar will work through the speakers, in effect its permanently muted.
GM kept pestering me to subscribe for it. I don’t need it.
LOL, ok thank you :)

Once, after a very, very long day at work, I walked up to the door of my home and pressed the unlock button on my key fob.
I felt pretty stupid as I then unlocked the door with the key.
