General Motors was on hand at this years Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas where it announced a number of new high-tech products including the OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle) kit. The automaker just announced that the first batches of OnStar FMV units are set to arrive at Best Buy on July 24.
The kit will allow owners of non-GM brands to retrofit the rearview mirror module into their own cars and enjoy all of the features the system offers. Likewise, owners of older GM vehicles will be able to purchase the kit as well. GM has priced the kit at $299.99 with service plans that start at $18.95 or $199 a year. The partnership with Best Buy will also allow customers to have the system professionally installed at the store for $75.
The wait is over, said OnStar President Linda Marshall. Since we announced OnStar FMV at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, thousands of people have signed up to be notified when this innovative product is ready to buy. Now, through Best Buy, they can enhance their Fords, Toyotas, Chryslers and other brands with the power of OnStar.
The OnStar FMV will offer all the same features found on GM cars such as automatic crash response, turn-by-turn navigation, stolen vehicle assistance hands-free calling and roadside assistance.
Oh. BTW. This thread should not be construed as me shilling for GM, OnStar or Best Buy. Just throwing out some information....
Yeah, just what I want - another way for the government to track me - and I pay for it. No thanks.
Well for starters, a GPS does not automatically self-notify emergency crews when your car is in a serious crash... (just saying, it gives peace of mind to some)
Yes came standard on my vehicle
Do you use it?
No of course not totally useless - a solution for which there is no problem - like starting your car from your cell phone. Why would anyone ever want to?
>>>why not buy a GPS and be done with it?
Because it’s not just about GPS.
I don’t have OnStar, but I’ve wanted it for years. Not for me so much as my girlfriend.
The GPS is only part of it. It also serves as a Lo Jack of sorts, calls for help when you car registers an accident, and can remotely unlock your car if you accidentally leave your keys in it.
I’ve wanted it for a long torn, but I’m torn now because I don’t want GM to get any part of my money.
You can't call up your GPS at 3 in the morning and ask it to talk dirty to you.
my parents loved theirs. on top of the gps, the crash response, the remote unlock.. there’s a lot of neat features which tie into engine maintainance. on-star would send an email to them when it was time for oil changes, filter changes, tire rotation, and some other stuff.
it’s pretty decent for people who aren’t mechanically inclined and don’t always remember what needs to be done.
GPS also does not notify social services if you accidentally lock your kid in the car.
IMO, OnStar is way overpriced.
Because Onstar will give you an opportunity to fund fascist motors gain a bit of security and at the same time...
Wasn’t there an episode of “Celebrity Apprentice” where they had to create a tv commercial to launch this?
It’s Big Brother in a box. Ain’t worth the money.
I don’t even think it has to be a serious crash. My cousin was bumped off the road by a group of punks who wanted her car and OnStar asked her if there was a problem. Local cops and a state trooper showed up as they were trying to break the windows.
Do you have a working link which goes to the article?
“like starting your car from your cell phone. Why would anyone ever want to?”

If you lived in Texas, you’d understand. Even a minute of starting a vehicle to cool down from an interior temperature of 150 degrees is pretty cool.
On* just saved my buddy’s life here in Indiana.
Head on crash in a rural area.
Both cars were demolished, 3 people lifelined out.
