Things On Cars that Will Be Gone by 2025
Motor Trend ^ | 07/18/2011 | Karla Sanchez

We’ve seen a lot of advancements in automotive design and technology in the past 14 years, so what’s to come in the next 14 years? We’ve all heard of autonomous cars in the making, and we’ve seen the evolution of hybrids, electrics, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and advanced safety features that are capable of stopping a vehicle in its tracks.

Imajerk17 asks us to look into the future to 2025, and debate what things automotive will be phased out in the cars of the future. He thinks steering wheels will be phased out and may possibly be replaced with a joystick, and with the development of aluminum and carbon-fiber-bodied cars, will steel-bodied cars make it to see 2025? Other forum posters are scared manual transmissions will a long-lost memory. What do you think? What things automotive will likely be gone by 2025? Would you go as far to say that human drivers will no longer be needed?

Americans.

Who can afford $5000.00 per gallon gas?

I wish I was kidding ...

I liked the old high beam floor switch that you controlled with your left foot.

I think Bob has it right. Wireless charging trays are in homes now. Probably won’t be long before they are in cars. I was thinking that IF there was a need for a plug in appliance; then it would be the standard 110 home appliance type with an automatic regulating voltage adapter.

But you have a good point about the possibility of no more 12 volt systems.

When did they stop equipping cars with turn signals?

They're optional equipment. Everything's there to make them work. It's just a simple ID-10-T interface that prevents most of them from working.

Vans and pickups still had them into the late ‘70s and beyond.

Yup. The Dodge Ram pickup had side vent windows until 1993. (1994 was the debut of the "Peterbuilt style" Ram.) Not sure about the van.

Rush's song Red Barchetta is based on the short story "A Nice Morning Drive" which addresses the situation you describe.

It's an interesting read. The story is that safety becomes paramount in automobiles. With the eventual evolution of people driving these safe vehicles and making a game of wrecking anyone not driving one of these vehicles.

At 120F, if you aren't getting evaporative cooling from profuse sweat, you are getting an effect the opposite of wind chill--by increasing airflow you are increasing heat exchange, only in this case, the heat is going into your body instead of coming out. Hydration is life, but also the ability to function well, alertly, and respond appropriately to stimuli.

Israeli soldiers participated in a study to determine the amount of fluids needed in such an environment to retain optimum combat effectiveness: a liter an hour. Don't just knock back water without some sort of electrolyte replacement, either.

Even with an injected (gasoline engine) design, isn’t there still a throttle body? The restrictor plate could still be placed there, no?

When I was a kid, cars had front windows with a little triangular vent window you could crank open manually to have the wind directed onto your body. There were also vents at the level of your feet. On a station wagon, you could open the rear window. In the days before cars were air-conditioned, or at least before air-conditioning worked very well, these worked fairly well to keep drivers and passengers more comfortable on a drive in warm weather. I wish they still had these conveniences.

We called the triangular windows "wind wings". Those and vents would be a welcome addition to newer cars.

Audio CD players will disappear in favor of input ports for MP3 devices like I-pods.

Or just be their own iPod, all you need is some flash memory, maybe WiFi to sync with your computer, or to just sync with your cloud storage when you're parked in the garage.
