Fell for the 'French bread which is so delicious that it will make you cry' scam
A Taiwanese man reportedly paid about $400,000 for a croissant he never got to eat.
The man, only identified by his last name, Chiu, reportedly fell for an Internet scam that promoted, "French bread which is so delicious that it will make you cry," reported Apple Daily.
Chui reportedly saw the photograph of the alleged croissant and proceeded to transmit 99 Taiwan dollars to the bakery through an ATM. Someone from the company then called him to say there was a mistake and he had to repeat the transaction, which he did.
A second phone call came from a "bank manager," asking him to repeat the transaction, and then a third from someone who posed as a representative "from the Monetary Supervision Commission," asking him to repeat the transaction to avoid charges of money laundering.
He had transmitted 12 million Taiwan dollars before realising he had been scammed.
"Sir, this is the Monetary Supervision Commission. You bank account is clogged. Before anymore deposits can flow in, we'll need you to empty it, so we can find the problem."
i think they got him into a panic thinking there could be jail time if he didn’t comply
the problem wasn’t the french bread... the problem was believing those contacting him were who they said they were
just dang
never believe anyone calling YOU when it comes to financial issues, unless you know the person. always call THEM on a number you found yourself. they could always give you fake numbers to confirm their identity
Chiu must be pretty stupid,
I bet he did cry.
A local county man, here in WA state, was recently arrested for running one of these Nigerian scams. He used his real name.
This sounds like something Obama would try buying with tax payer money.
I’m going to have to Chiu on this.
That’s a lot of bread.
Forget Chiu.
His wife reportedly said, “Ah, Chiu...”
$400K for a croissant?
Sounds like Mr. Chiu got “rolled.”
Pun intended.
Chiu on that
“Mr. Chiu sounds like a meathead.”
I wouldn’t say that- we had some very intellectually stimulating conversations last weekend when we were out hunting snipe.
Well, it’s so good it made him cry, alright.
Yeah, well, he's a Taipei personality.
Formosa us, that would be too much.
I just hope Chiu isn’t Chinese for “Boehner”
I fell for an Internet scam just this week (true!), for the sum of $27.00 American dollars, a fortune for a starving child in Africa. Fortunately, I called my credit card company who helped me recover the fortune.
