Warming ocean could melt ice faster than thought

WASHINGTON (AP) — Warming air from climate change isn't the only thing that will speed ice melting near the poles — so will the warming water beneath the ice, a new study points out.

Increased melting of ice in Greenland and parts of Antarctica has been reported as a consequence of global warming, potentially raising sea levels. But little attention has been paid to the impact of warmer water beneath the ice.

Now, Jianjun Yin of the University of Arizona and colleagues report the warming water could mean polar ice melting faster than had been expected. Their report was published Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience.

While melting floating ice won't raise sea level, ice flowing into the sea from glaciers often reaches the bottom, and grounded ice melted by warm water around it can produce added water to the sea.

"Ocean warming is very important compared to atmospheric warming because water has a much larger heat capacity than air," Yin explained. "If you put an ice cube in a warm room, it will melt in several hours. But if you put an ice cube in a cup of warm water, it will disappear in just minutes."

In addition, Yin explained, if floating ice along the coastal areas melts it will allow the flow of glaciers to accelerate, bringing more ice into the seas.

"This mean that both Greenland and Antarctica are probably going to melt faster than the scientific community previously thought," co-author Jonathan T. Overpeck said in a statement.

It's just too bad that we don't have an all mighty creator to take care of such concerns for us.

Since we don't I guess we will just have to save the planet on our own.

We could maybe get government to support our efforts too if we give them a reasonable donation for it, like say 100% of our income?

And northeast Indiana will have coconut trees? I don’t see a downside here ....

We will need assistance (at a cost)from our government to prevent our children from getting fat on coconut milk!

That graph does show less ice on those particular dates for 2011 over 1979. But this is not enough to go on. Is there a web site to get these kinds of images for arbitrary days for those of us who want to see if there is a real trend for ourselves?

If bullsh!t can melt the poles... then we are in seriously deep kimchi.

Hey ya wanna get published? Ya go with the program. As shown clearly by leaked emails from the CRU:

“This was the danger of always criticising the skeptics for not publishing in the “peer-reviewed literature”. Obviously, they found a solution to that–take over a journal! So what do we do about this? I think we have to stop considering “Climate Research” as a legitimate peer-reviewed journal. Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal. We would also need to consider what we tell or request of our more reasonable colleagues who currently sit on the editorial board…What do others think?”

“I will be emailing the journal to tell them I’m having nothing more to do with it until they rid themselves of this troublesome editor.”“It results from this journal having a number of editors. The responsible one for this is a well-known skeptic in NZ. He has let a few papers through by Michaels and Gray in the past. I’ve had words with Hans von Storch about this, but got nowhere. Another thing to discuss in Nice !”

Yes, it does show less ice for June 29th 2011 than June 29th 1979 but not much less. In fact in some areas the sea ice is thicker this year. Look around in the areas around Norway and Scandinavia.

Compare Daily Sea Ice

There is the page I used. You can enter any dates from 1979 - present. There are some days here and there where they didn't get the data.

F’r sure none of the “warmistas” are going to do a FOIA search on the USN’s records of polar ice thickness at various seasons/years. (Not that I expect the USN to be happily forthcoming on their hard-earned data.)

I’m certain the USN has the most extensive hydrographic data base extant. They have to in order to perform their mission. Its “Boats” live, (and sometimes die) based upon their intimate knowledge of water temperature gradients, currents and their effects upon sound propogation. >PS

Jellyfish Lake is located on Eli Malk island in the Republic of Palau. Twelve thousand years ago these jellyfish became trapped in a natural basin on the island when the ocean receded.

Looks like the sea level, like the climate, is constantly in a state of flux, with the mythical "normal" defined as, "the conditions prevailing when the current bleating moonbat first became aware of said conditions...which is the same day that Darwinism ceased to be of any effect. All efforts must be expended to maintain stasis after that point in time."

“’the conditions prevailing when the current bleating moonbat first became aware of said conditions.’”

Every day should be just like my romanticized memory of the happiest day of my childhood, or I’m gonna cry — and promulgate a thousand regulations to make everyone else pay for my intervening misery, dammit!

The most dangerous thing about socialists, is that they are persistent. It is their religion and their religious faith requires them to proselytize constantly to advance their faith. Warming hasn’t occurred since at least 2003, possibly 1998, but that won’t stop the socialists from lying about it until they get their socialist green agenda completely installed.

I don’t think a bloodless revolution is going to stop them. We may need to water the Tree of Liberty a little bit.
